Customer service is the name of the game at The High Hermitage Holiday Park, a peaceful place in the Northumberland countryside where staff are always on hand to deal with queries or concerns, and to keep the amenities up to high standards. The landscape includes ancient woodland and the site's own stream, Kitty's Burn, all in a wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham via a few friendly local pubs. Many guests use the park as a base for the Northumberland coast; other famed destinations like Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle are within easy reach. The High Hermitage is less than a mile from Prudhoe railway station, where you can access trains to Newcastle, Carlisle, Hexham and Glasgow. Fishing is available on site; pick up a permit at reception.

Liked: The laid back feels of the campsite ,a lovely mix between wild camping and the basic facilities which make it more comfortable . Gordon was lovely and very friendly and helpful. Yes there is works going on but it didn't spoil our stay one bit . Toilets were always lovely and clean and the grounds were very well kept . Only a small site but plenty of space between pitches . My dogs had a great time with plenty of running space and my grandson enjoyed riding his bike and exploring the surrounding woods . Also ball games were encouraged and there was plenty room to play . All in all a lovely relaxing site and look forward to returning

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Liked: Lovely site, nice flat pitches. Site manager was very welcoming and informative.

Disliked: Facilities had steep steps which makes it difficult for anyone with mobility problems and impossible for wheelchair users. They were clean but very old and in need of a refurb.
We were informed that there will be new facilities in the future.
We did find it quite expensive to stay on site as there are cheaper campsites in the area that are just as good.

Liked: My new van battery went flat as soon as I arrived and check in . Gordon, the warden was so so helpful . He lent me his trickle charger to get the battery up and running again and lent it me 2 days later so I could check the state of the battery before leaving . He was very cheerful
- nothing was too much of a problem for him.
The only downside was the JCB and half dug up field where another toilet block of s going to be erected. This was disturb the serenity of the site for those staying there during the week

Disliked: See above
The disruption caused by the new toilet block needs to be mentioned on the website as this is not a cheap site and people need to know what they’re buying into when booking a holiday there . Fortunately I stayed at a weekend when no dogging or building was taking place

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: The onsite warden. Gordon was really friendly and welcoming. He was a mine of information and obviously worked really hard to keep the site well maintained. Nothing was too much. Although old, the toilets and shower were really clean. There was a field that we could use to exercise our dog. The fully serviced pitch was large and had a table for our personal use. There were two pubs within walking distance, one where dogs were only allowed in the beer garden and one a little further which allowed dogs inside. There was some work already being done on the site but this wasn't disturbing as was only being done for a couple of hours a day whilst we were there.

Disliked: The steps on the approach to the toilet block were uneven. There was a wooden rail to help to go up and down but it would not be suitable for disabled people or people unsteady on their feet. There were only two toilets and one shower (very large) in the ladies and one urinal, one toilet and one shower cubicle in the gents but a new toilet block will be built soon.

Liked: There is work on site opposite the hard standings where a new toilet block and family room will be built.
We used a super pitch. Only 6 pitches are available. Others are grass. The toilet block is very old. Only two toilets and a showers per side. C.E. P. Adjacent to the toilet block but down a flight of steps to get to it. A major construction by Northumberland Water opposite the entrance.
The one plus is Gordon the Warden. Very chatty and knowledgeable of the area.
Overall, we felt the pitch fee paid gave us very poor value for money.

Local attractions

The nearby town of Prudhoe, about 11 miles from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a Norman castle and a waterpark as well as access to the old Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, now the Tyne Valley Line and still running regularly between the two cities. If you're anywhere around this part of England, a must-see is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, the most visited destination in the north of England, running for about 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, across the North Pennines, and along Northumberland National Park. The wall has several Roman sites along its length, including Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete Roman fort in Britain; eight forts and live excavations at the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda, and Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum. Paintball, quad biking, go karting, offroad 4x4 driving and a Go Ape! are all available locally. A shopping centre is 20 minutes away.
