  • Peaceful Lynmouth site with views over the Bristol Channel
  • In Exmoor National Park, 30 minutes' drive to Ilfracombe and Minehead
  • Food shop and wifi on site; five minutes' drive to Lynmouth harbour
In need of a Devon des res with smashing views? Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is a quiet site in the hills above Lynton and Lynmouth in the Exmoor National Park. As it's got direct access to the A39, it's a top contender if you're looking for a base to explore the Devon and Somerset coast. Needless to say, there's plenty of stunning scenery around here: keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife like wild ponies, red deer and birds of prey. The surrounding countryside is also full of trails for rural rambles, including the long-distance South West Coast Path. Dogs are welcome at the site and direct access to footpaths makes it a breeze to keep Fido fit and healthy. Lynmouth Holiday Retreat has plenty of practical benefits too: facilities include a food shop, wifi, a washing-up area and a launderette to keep your gear spick and span. If you find yourself getting peckish, feel free to set up a barbecue, order a takeaway or head down into Lynton (five minutes away) to stock up at the supermarket. You'll likely want to linger here for a stroll around its picture-worthy cottages, fishing boats and genteel Victorian buildings. Alternatively, forage for your own supper by taking the kids crabbing down at Lynmouth harbour (five minutes' drive).

What customers say

This top-notch site offers fantastic views and pristine, modern facilities. Friendly, helpful staff are a highlight, as are the great dog-friendly extras and handy food choices. Village walks are great but steep. Shower timers and Wi-Fi could be better.

Beggar's Field electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Brilliant place with friendly staff and clean facilities. On site shop was convenient and made us feel very welcome. It was a shame we weren’t allowed a gazebo as this would have allowed us more family time together when it was raining, but we knew this when booking. 35 min drive from a brilliant surf shop and beach that allowed us to rip up some waves. Cornish pasties and Devon milk from the gulf garage down the road are recommended :) Can see the stars at night very clearly, which was a beautiful addition as that’s not very common where we live.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your wonderful review 🙌 We’re delighted you enjoyed the friendly staff, our clean facilities 🚿, and the little touches like the shop 🛒.

It sounds like you made the most of exploring the area too — from surfing 🏄 to local Cornish pasties 🥟! YES and those stunning starry skies, we love that we are part of the "International Dark Sky Reserve" which means we defiantly get some of the best starry nights around✨!

We really appreciate your understanding about gazebos (we have had too many taken away by the wind in the past) and hope the rest of your stay more than made up for it. We’d love to welcome you back again soon! 🏕️

Beggar's Field electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked We throughly enjoyed our stay.
All of the staff were friendly and welcoming, and we were provided with on site information once we checked in at reception. The facilities were very clean and tidy. Plenty of toilets and shower cubicles available.
On a Monday evening there is a pizza van which comes on site and makes home made pizzas. We loved this and the pizza’s tasted great and were reasonably priced. On site also (Thurs to Mon) is a food & drinks van that does Cocktails, smoothies, breakfast, burgers and waffles. At reception they do fresh croissants (cooked to order) and they taste delicious. We loved the fact that we could call reception to order them and then collect them 20 minutes later. We would definitely return and would recommend to others.

Liked Great to see a very well maintained and clean site. The Airstream cafe provided a welcome breakfast bap in the mornings and drinks in afternoon and evening. Very friendly chatty staff. Any issues such as blocked CDP dealt with instantly. Lovely enclosed dog field which we enjoyed walking around. Also walks to Lynton direct from the site.

Rabbit Field electric gravel and hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked The facilities were outstanding, spotlessly clean and well maintained, as were the grounds and estate generally. Staff were very friendly and helpful, they were knowledgeable about which events were on in the area so we could plan our stay. There was quite a crowd on site when we visited, but the facilties were never stretched and the atmosphere was peaceful and calm. Stunning views from the site and lovely walks, although the terrain on some on the footpaths could be challenging but we didn't mind that at all, because the area is stunning, as are the main villages on Lynmouth and Lynton.

Disliked My main dislike has nothing to do with how the site is managed, it's to do with the selfish customers who smoked and stubbed out their cigarettes at the main entrance to the wash areas as well as dropping their empty fag packets on the floor - plenty of bins available, so absolutely no excuse.

Would also have been good if the wash hand basins had plugs, it would save a lot of water - but to be proactive, I've ordered some for my travel kit, for the next time we visit.

We’re sorry to hear about the inconsiderate behaviour of a few guests — littering is never acceptable 🚭. Your suggestion about basin plugs is helpful, and we’ll look into that. We’re delighted you plan to return and look forward to welcoming you back! 💛

Local attractions

Guests here have plenty of attractions and activities on their doorstep in and around Lynton and Lynmouth (five minutes' drive). For a novel way to travel between the two, try the funicular cliff railway that connects the twin towns. In the surrounding countryside, you can marvel at the geological formations of the Valley of the Rocks (10 minutes) or head out to the forest around Watersmeet (15 minutes) for waterfalls and an elegant Victorian tea room. Many head to this part of the country in search of outdoor pursuits, so sporty types may well be pleased to learn that Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is close to a stables (10 minutes), fishing lake (20 minutes) and golf club (40 minutes). To really get that blood pumping, hike some or all of the 14 miles along the coast to Combe Martin, a hilly stretch of the South West Coast Path that includes this trail's highest point. You may, of course, prefer a day lounging on the beach (and with beaches like these, who can blame you?). Top seaside towns nearby include Minehead, with its rockpools, and Ilfracombe with its castle and aquarium (both half an hour away).
