  • Family-run campsite on a dairy farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Access to Lathkill Dale directly from the site
  • Woodfired pizzas and ice cream sold on site
When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. The site also sells woodfired pizzas, which should be handy if you fancy eating something more substantial.

What customers say

This large, family-friendly farm campsite boasts stunning Peak District views and direct Lathkill Dale access. Guests loved the spacious, unassigned pitches, friendly owners, and clean facilities, including new showers. On-site food trucks and a small shop were hits. Despite some noting facility distances and occasional noise, the relaxed atmosphere and value make it highly recommended.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Views amazing , would be good when not so busy.

Disliked Too many tents on the weekend , not enough toilets. Showers not working. Site not secure . Lots of groups up late so not really a peaceful getaway .

From the manager: Hi sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay at our campsite on a gloriously sunny August weekend, we don’t believe the campsite was overcrowded, we could of filled it three times over if we excepted all the bookings that wanted to come. The problems with the water pressure is very short lived at peak times as is the same at any popular campsites in beautiful locations.

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked The location was great. Walking available straight to the Lathkill Dale and only a short drive to Bakewell. Excluding the camp site noise the locality is very quiet with just the usual expected farm noises and smells :)

Pizza van onsite did amazing pizza's.

Disliked The campsite was enormous, I mean huge. For the size of the site the facilities are inadequate. Queues for men's toilets and long queues for washing up. There were 4 sinks but only 2 draining boards and water dribbled out of tap.

As we were camped on the hardstanding pitches which are the by the entrance the cars are literally non stop past our pitch. We arrived at 14:20pm and the cars did not stop going past until about 10:00pm. I mean 1 or 2 cars every minute. It was incredible. Many people where also driving round the campsite to go to the toilet and drop off their rubbish at the one bin location. Many where not adhering to the site speed limit so it was dangerous, noisy and very dusty.

On the Saturday night there was no water pressure so we couldn't have showers and the toilet cisterns weren't filling so you couldn't flush the loos.

From the manager: Hi thanks for taking time out of your life to write such a in-depth review of our campsite, obviously on Friday afternoon everybody arrives when they finish work so there are alot of cars arriving and for some reason you pitched on the first gravel hard standing next to the road when you had the choice of 20 more private pitches. We did have a slight problem with the gent’s toilets on Saturday night but like every other problem we have we sorted it out with no drama.

Just a fab site!!!

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Driving away.

Disliked Left after first night. No enforcement of noise curfew - groups still partying loudly at 02.30.

Toilets filthy and far too few for numbers of campers, same with showers.

No allocation of hard standing leaving a free for all approach.

From the manager: Hi, I can see from your other reviews your a glass half empty person, we have been cleaning the toilet and shower blocks 5 times a day over the weekend, we are trying our best, but we are amazed the state that some people our leaving our facilities in. We have hundreds of people here every weekend who love our site and how we run it and we will never be discouraged by a few negative people like you.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Campsite was well kept, clean, owners absolutely lovely and very caring.

Shop well equipped, pizzas on site fab and mobile bar also!

Great location, many walks and small car journey to many great towns and walks!

Disliked I think it would be beneficial to have a field for those travelling without children to have the option. We were surrounded by kids (understood it’s school holidays) but the screaming from 6am until 11pm felt unbearable. It made us leave a day early as we were so tired from being up. There are many fields and many spots, having one field sign posted and just for this would not be much trouble but really enhance people’s stay.

It would also be great to have a dogs on lead rule (again, maybe a field dedicated to this or a fenced off area for play) balls everywhere, dogs running up and down the fields made our dogs anxious and nervous. Particularly when balls came towards them and biggers dogs came running. This meant ours had to be kept on a very short lead very close to us at all times.

We would stay again if the above changes occur or are considered OR when it’s not school holidays.

Local attractions

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
