  • Peaceful Lynmouth site with views over the Bristol Channel
  • In Exmoor National Park, 30 minutes' drive to Ilfracombe and Minehead
  • Food shop and wifi on site; five minutes' drive to Lynmouth harbour
In need of a Devon des res with smashing views? Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is a quiet site in the hills above Lynton and Lynmouth in the Exmoor National Park. As it's got direct access to the A39, it's a top contender if you're looking for a base to explore the Devon and Somerset coast. Needless to say, there's plenty of stunning scenery around here: keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife like wild ponies, red deer and birds of prey. The surrounding countryside is also full of trails for rural rambles, including the long-distance South West Coast Path. Dogs are welcome at the site and direct access to footpaths makes it a breeze to keep Fido fit and healthy. Lynmouth Holiday Retreat has plenty of practical benefits too: facilities include a food shop, wifi, a washing-up area and a launderette to keep your gear spick and span. If you find yourself getting peckish, feel free to set up a barbecue, order a takeaway or head down into Lynton (five minutes away) to stock up at the supermarket. You'll likely want to linger here for a stroll around its picture-worthy cottages, fishing boats and genteel Victorian buildings. Alternatively, forage for your own supper by taking the kids crabbing down at Lynmouth harbour (five minutes' drive).

Bay View electric grass and gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked - Great view from our pitch (Bay View).
- Very friendly staff, especially on check in. The gentleman walked me through everything I needed to know and where to find out pitch.
- The facilities were very well maintained.
- Plenty of spaces to do the washing up, plus the option of a dishwasher that only takes 5 minutes (no dishwasher tablets needed).
- Laundry room which takes coins only and has washing machine and dryer.
- A dog washing area.
- An enclosed dog field which is very big.
- The option to order fresh, hot pastries for the next morning and coffee.
- Every Monday they have a pizza fan which has a lovely menu and their pizzas are brilliant. You can buy soft drinks and dips too.
- On Friday through till Sunday they have a good van that does cocktails, milkshakes, burgers, hotdogs, and chips.
- Only a short drive from the beautiful Lynton.
- Best dog friendly campsite I've been to

Disliked - The shower room is very well maintained and clean but the showers don't stay on for very long and you have to press the button a lot.
- We were staying in a tent pitch and despite being quite some distance from the glamping pods, a big group arrived on the Friday and we're very loud even past the noise curfew of 10pm. Due to the reception being closed there was no one to mention this to and we were out early in the mornings and late back on the evenings. So the no loud noise after 10pm is hard to regulate.

The View fully-serviced grass touring pitch

Liked This campsite is situated in a beautiful area with stunning views of the surrounding hills, meadows and the sea in the distance. We liked the friendly and laid back atmosphere of the campsite. The facilities were very clean and the campsite was well managed. We would definitely recommend here and would stay here again.

We walked to Lynmouth from the campsite via the footpath. We found the footpath to be very steep downhill to Lynmouth. It was hard on our knees. We took the funicular up to Lynton from Lynmouth and then walked up the steep footpath from there back to the campsite. Although the walk is scenic, we personally found it rather challenging for our abilities. We are in our 60s. However, for more able bodied people, this may not be so challenging.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review! 😊 The views definitely are stunning! And we also love the peaceful atmosphere – and it's wonderful to know you felt well looked after during your stay 🌿⛺

We really appreciate your honest feedback about the walk into Lynmouth. It is a beautiful route but we completely understand how the steepness can be tough on the knees, especially coming back uphill! 🥾⛰️ Taking the funicular up to Lynton is such a treat with those coastal views! 🚞

Thank you again for your recommendation – it means a lot. We’d love to welcome you back anytime!

The View fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Lovely welcome on arrival. Very friendly and helpful staff who were visible throughout our stay.
Modern and very well maintained facilities.

Disliked Location of site - you need a car or be very fit. Very Steep long walk from site into Lynmouth.
Late check-in of 2pm and early checkout of 10.30am. Not sure why they need at 3.5 hour turnaround for a touring pitch. Maybe it is something to do with offering you an earlier check-in or late checkout of an extra 1.5 hours for an extra £10. Bit naughty if you ask me.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your review! 😊 We're really glad you enjoyed the warm welcome, friendly team, and our modern facilities – it means a lot to hear that 🌟🚿

We understand your thoughts about the location – the hills around here can definitely be a workout! 🥾⛰️ That said, we think the peaceful setting and those stunning ocean and countryside views make it well worth the effort 🌊🌿 While we’d love to see a local bus route serve here one day, it’s sadly out of our hands at the moment.

Regarding check-in/out times, it is a necessity to allow enough time to ensure all pitches are properly prepared, grass is kept short, and the fast-growing Exmoor vegetation is tamed – all to keep the site looking its best for everyone 🌱✂️💚 The early check-in and late check-out options are there for guests who’d like a little extra flexibility ⏰

We really appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back again sometime! 😊

Beggar's Field electric grass touring pitch

Liked We loved this site. The facilities were very good, kept super clean, plenty of space in the shower cubicles and plenty of hot water.
The staff were welcoming and helpful.
I was particularly grateful to the young man who made a special effort to help with some cycling routes for us. Cycling in the area is definitely a challenge but with power assisted cycles the route to Lynton is fine. We locked our cycles at the town hall in Lynton and took the funicular railway down to Lynmouth, which is well worth doing. The road into Lynmouth is extremely steep!
The site is on many levels and the grounds are very well maintained. I would say most of the pitches had lovely views: some more so than others.
There is a mobile food and drink van which does the normal takeaway food but also cocktails and milkshakes! We didn’t use the on site shop but it looked well stocked. We would be very happy to return to this site.

Disliked Nothing to dislike but it did take us a bit of time to level the motorhome on the pitch we were assigned. Probably our issue rather than the site’s!
Perhaps “keep dogs on a lead” could be more upheld as there were a number of dogs allowed to wander and i witnessed a dog run after a child, no harm done but could be frightening.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the lovely and detailed review! 😊 We're so glad you loved the site – from the spotless facilities 🚿 to the friendly team, and those stunning views 🌄

A big shoutout to Dan who helped with your cycling routes 🚴‍♀️💪 – they’ll be really pleased to hear it made a difference! Great tip about the cliff railway too – such a fun way to explore Lynton & Lynmouth 🚠✨

We appreciate the feedback about keeping dogs on leads – we'll look into our current signage and see if we can make them more visible as we cannot always monitor the responsibility of dog owners. It’s helpful to hear situations like this so we can look at how we can make everyone’s stay as enjoyable as possible.

Hope to welcome you back for another great stay soon – maybe for a milkshake and a sunset cocktail next time! 🍹🌅

Local attractions

Guests here have plenty of attractions and activities on their doorstep in and around Lynton and Lynmouth (five minutes' drive). For a novel way to travel between the two, try the funicular cliff railway that connects the twin towns. In the surrounding countryside, you can marvel at the geological formations of the Valley of the Rocks (10 minutes) or head out to the forest around Watersmeet (15 minutes) for waterfalls and an elegant Victorian tea room. Many head to this part of the country in search of outdoor pursuits, so sporty types may well be pleased to learn that Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is close to a stables (10 minutes), fishing lake (20 minutes) and golf club (40 minutes). To really get that blood pumping, hike some or all of the 14 miles along the coast to Combe Martin, a hilly stretch of the South West Coast Path that includes this trail's highest point. You may, of course, prefer a day lounging on the beach (and with beaches like these, who can blame you?). Top seaside towns nearby include Minehead, with its rockpools, and Ilfracombe with its castle and aquarium (both half an hour away).
