Whether you go by car or bicycle, there are several local historic sites to include on your outings. De Wiersse Castle Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to start – it has 28 acres of gardens and 74 acres of landscaped park surrounding a manor house. Perhaps you want to scout out new pastures for your next hike or bicycle ride. For this, Veluwezoom National Park (half an hour), the oldest national park in the Netherlands, is a great contender with sand drifts, hills, forests, farms and country houses. The Posbank has stunning views over the whole national park, as long as you don’t mind a 90-metre climb. Arnhem (45 minutes), just south, has a famed fashion district if you fancy a day of hiking followed by shopping. You may know a little about the popular Zutphen (20 minutes) already, but if not, don’t worry, as there are plenty of museums in the small city that will tell you about its history. Hire an electric boat to glide down the river Berkel and canals. In Zutphense Museumhaven, your boat should seem state-of-the-art compared to the city’s old ships.
