If you have your sights set on the Atlantic coast of France for your next holiday, Camping Paradis La Grand’ Métairie might just be the place. This peaceful Vendée site on the outskirts of Saint-Hilaire-la-Forêt (it’s a five-minute walk to the village patisserie – just sayin’…) is a 15-minute drive from the wind-swept beaches of the Bay of Biscay. Bring your surfboard, if that’s your jam, or have a go at learning how to catch a wave – there are several surf schools along the forest-fringed sandy beach south of Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard (five minutes’ drive).
Travelling with children? Be warned: there’s a chance you might see (relatively) little of them during your stint here, as they spend their time making new friends on the playground or at the kids’ club, feeding the friendly animals at the on-site miniature farm and splashing around the pools. Yes, that’s ‘pools’ – plural: in addition to the heated indoor pool, there’s an outdoor one (featuring a lazy river) and a paddling area. Outside, there is also a hot tub.
Meanwhile, grown-ups catch up on their Zs on the poolside lawn, challenge each other at a game of pétanque or hire a bike to explore the local area. The countryside around the site is dotted with prehistoric remains, like the Dolmen de la Sulette (a 10-minute bike ride) and the Dolmen de la Frébouchère (20 minutes). And in the evening, everybody gathers at La Guinguette, the on-site restaurant that serves burgers, pizzas and other dishes. Those who would rather self-cater can stock up on provisions in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard or Avrillé (five minutes’ drive).

Less than a kilometre from the site is Cairn - Prehistory Center (about a 10-minute walk), where you can learn about the Neolithic past of this region. Check out the hunting area (complete with 3D animals) and the archaeological digs, before heading indoors where hands-on displays illustrate the lifestyle of our ancestors.
Activities at Le Château des Aventuriers (five minutes’ drive) range from a pirates’ treasure hunt to a murder mystery, but there’s also plenty for younger children, including a Western-style village with inflatable totems, and a miniature adventure course dotted with beloved fairy-tale characters.
Les Sables-d’Olonne (half an hour) is a pretty seaside resort with the Museum of Shell, displaying thousands of shells from all over the world, including the pearlescent nautilus. Not had your fill of shells yet? The houses in the L’île Penotte area are decorated with mosaics made with mussel, oyster and other shells.
