Your setting by the splendid Dordogne is splendid enough. But bag a stay at Camping Le Vaurette between Auvergne and Périgord and you'll be bagging a whole heap more: trout fishing, canoeing and kayaking very close by; marked – and hugely scenic – walking trails from local town Monceaux sur Dordogne... and a sandy beach right at your disposal right on site. Camping Le Vaurette is in a hilly region six kilometres from Monceaux sur Dordogne, a mere few metres from the river and its weeks' worth of activities on and around the water. World-famed sightseeing is close to hand too, with the Gouffre de Padirac within 45 minutes and Rocamadour within an hour... and the St James's Way stopoff and strawberry town Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne within 15 minutes: if the kids aren't impressed with the former, they'll surely be with the latter... The site is in handsome green surrounds by the banks of the Dordogne, with several of its grass pitches available by the river. A heated pool is open in summer for those who don't fancy dips in the Dordogne, and leisure options on land are sorted at the ping pong tables, pétanque court and areas for football, basketball, volleyball and badminton. Two snack bars with terraces are also on site. If you're self catering, the site shop sells essentials and a farmers' market runs at Monceaux every summer Thursday.

喜欢: Fantastic location, the river flows right by it so paddling, swimming and canoeing are possible. Shady pitches, great facilities. The surrounding countryside is very hilly so bigger motorhomes may struggle, but if you are confident but cautious it is an easy site to find. Nice little snack-bar . Would definitely visit again . Even though it was busy it did not feel full and the facilities coped easily .

不喜欢: Slightly spoiled by teenagers roaming around late at night, making noise up until 2am. We did visit at peak season, so probably quieter away from the kids holidays.

喜欢: Amazing spot right next to the river. Loads of space per pitch. The toilets and showers are immaculate and the building is well designed. Loads to do if you have kids. Nice little shop were you can order fresh bakery items daily. The shop Sells plenty of essentials. There’s a bar and snack shop open until late. The lady on reception was very happy and helpful and her English is excellent. I’d definitely come back as it’s such an amazing place. It’s surprisingly quiet considering there are a fair few people here. Normally I don’t like busy campsites but this is quiet and genuinely doesn’t feel busy at all! We brought our own kayaks and there are plenty of places to get in the river. You can hire them too.

Several walking and cycling trails are easily reached from the site, so hire a bike from the team or set out on foot around the green lands of the Dordogne. A nifty way to combine both is to ride along to Monceaux via the D12, then set out from town for a wander around the marked walking trails. This is a a land of handsome and historic villages too: among your many viewsome options are Curemonte 25 minutes away, Collonges-la-Rouge witihn 30, Carennac within 35 and Autoire and Loubressac within 40. Carennac, one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, has 15th and 16th-century houses, the Château des Doyens and the 11th-century Church of Saint Peter. Another Les Plus Beaux villages is the medieval commune of Turenne (45 minutes), with spectacular views from the top of its circular 12th-century César Tower across the Limousin countryside and forests to the mountains beyond.
