On a road trip around Albania? Hanging around for a few days to relax on the black sands of Velipojë Beach (five minutes’ drive)? Whatever your holiday style, Camping Nika is a small and leafy choice for family camping at the seaside, with mountain backdrops to the neatly landscaped grass pitches and a safety barrier at the entrance gate. The touring pitches all have electric hook-ups and connections for drinking water, and the site is floodlit after dark, with cameras running for your total security. Handy facilities include modern communal showers with plenty of hot water, a laundry area (with a drying room) and a dishwashing sink to keep everything (and everybody) looking pristine. You also have use of a shared barbecue, and a coffee machine and a soft-drink dispenser are just steps from the pitches. If you feel like dining out, there are pizzerias and beach bars in seaside Velipojë, while self-caterers can pick up provisions in the local supermarkets.

Take a stroll around the historic city of Shkodër (40 minutes’ drive), stopping to admire the tall minarets of the Xhamia e Madhe - Ebu Bekr mosque and the domes of the Orthodox church of the Nativity of Christ. There are interesting exhibitions at ‘Marubi’ National Museum of Photography, on Kolë Idromeno street, which is lined with cafés and restaurants. On the outskirts of Shkodër, the ruins of Rozafa Castle (40 minutes) sit atop a forbidding hill at the confluence of the rivers Buna and Drin. While the current structure was built by the Venetians around the 1400s, some parts of the fortress date as far back as the 4th century BC. Step across the border into Montenegro to visit the Ethno Museum Draginë (50 minutes), whose displays illustrate the daily life and folkloric customs of the people of the Ana Malit region (which encompasses both northwestern Albania and south Montenegro).
