Oh, to be in the rural Yorkshire Dales, sipping on a brew surrounded by Howgill Lodge’s three resident alpacas on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate. Built into the hillside, the terraces are separated by dry stone walls and all spots have simply stunning views of green slopes. This may be a spectacularly rural spot, but there’s no shortage of stuff to get up to locally, whether you're watching the friendly resident alpacas tuck into their breakfast, taking a wild dip in the river Wharfe 10 minutes’ walk from the site or tracking down a pint of something in one of two traditional Yorkshire pubs half an hour’s walk away (one of these serves real ales and good food, and has a lush beer garden, by the way…) Alex and Georgina, the friendly staff at this dog-friendly site, have heaps of local knowledge. Let them dish out the goss on the area's walks, cycle routes and attractions as well as the top local places for food and drink (such as the café five minutes’ walk away for a choc brownie and milkshakes). You'll need all the calories if you're setting forth for Yorkshire Dales walks like Simon's Seat… It really doesn’t matter whether you’re after an action-packed getaway with the kids or a quiet wildlife retreat with loved ones and your canine companion – both are easily achievable here. And either way, modern, high-quality facilities on site include hot showers, laundry facilities and washing-up sinks.

喜欢 Everything, it’s just so well appointed plenty of space, excellent facilities, multiple toilets and shower blocks with nothing scrimped anywhere. If this area is gods country the site is at his left hand, it’s stunning.

不喜欢 Nothing at all, only a fool would pick holes in this site.

喜欢 This site is a gem with regards to location and cleanliness. There is loads to do if you don't mind walking through this lovely part of N Yorkshire. There is a great cafe right on your doorstep and the staff onsite were lovely.

不喜欢 WiFi is a little hit and miss but we did without it for years :)

喜欢 Being within the Yorkshire Dales has to be the perfect setting.
Lots of walks from the site, sadly some areas excluded dogs, I am not sure why.
The staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful.
The site had good facilities.
The pitches were level even though the site is on a hill.

不喜欢 Not a criticism of the site but the less than perfect score is due to tent dwellers near to me who chose to start their day at 5.30am and ensured everyone else did as well. They also had 4 very noisy dogs. Their presence was unpleasant. They were spoken to by other people camping nearby.

喜欢 Clean, efficient, great views, quiet site no rowdy people.

不喜欢 As a motorcyclist, it’s the gravel drive in.
As a beer drinker it’s the long trek to the pub, which some people will love walking by the river.

喜欢 Rural location & stunning views. The nearby cafe is excellent too.

不喜欢 The 100% gravel pitches are not our preference as it make ls us feel we’re staying in a car park. Would love the option of grass + gravel.

If one morning you feel inspired to go strolling, there’s no need to pack up the car. The path to Simon's Seat (half an hour’s walk to the top) is barely a couple minutes' stroll from the site and has simply grand views of the Yorkshire Dales. Carry on rambling into the surrounding moors, where there’s a waterfall dubbed ‘the valley of desolation’. There’s not much desolation around, but there is a gorgeous waterfall and a pool to wade in. A short drive will get you to local villages or towns like Grassington (20 minutes' drive), which has art galleries, a cobbled market square and e-bike hire, and Skipton (20 minutes), which has a castle and heaps of eateries. Another good outing is the Stump Cross Caverns (10 minutes). Discovered by lead miners in the mid 1860s, the cave complex has a cinema and exhibits including prehistoric remains of wolverine and reindeer. The caverns have a hilltop walk, but if you’re still in the mood for more good walks, excellent trails include those around the half-mile-long limestone gorge at Troller's Gill (10 minutes) and Rylstone Cross (25 minutes).
