Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

喜欢: Peaceful, stunning views, friendly site owners. Clean basic amenities. A short walk to the local village

不喜欢: Only one gripe. Solar powered lighting in the toiles would be easy to instal and cost nothing to run.

喜欢: I've stayed here lots of times now, and as ever the site remains superb. Quiet, well maintained, exceptionally clean toilets and showers, flat pitches and great price. Normally just me and the dog but thus time round with work mates to do the three peaks. Everyone loved the campsite..

喜欢: Great walking distance from the pubs. The Crown has great pub food. Owners have maintained the facilities well, clean, quiet with lovely scenery.

不喜欢: If staying with children small streams through the site which may be deceiving.

喜欢: Flat campsite with plenty of room. Water taps plentiful. Very clean facilities at all times. Was concerned about trainline- but whilst trains do blow their horns right by the campsite, they also stop running around half 10 and don't start very early. Lovely view of pen y Ghent from the farm, lots of tractors for young ones to spot (we are big tractor fans in this house) and the Ribble Way to walk on straight away. Two routes into Horton by foot- neither take long but one has more sheep.

喜欢: The site was clean and in a great spot for climbing pen y ghent, facilities were good and maintained well, there was enough space that we didn't feel crowded at all and the owners were kind and responded to emails quickly. Excellent value for money.

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
