If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

喜欢: The park for the kids was great

不喜欢: The the toilets was poor and not frequently cleaned! Both the mens and women's toilets was often overflowing onto the floor over the course of our 3 night stay and dirty toilet paper on the floor.

喜欢: Excellent site. Clean, quiet and everything you needed! Kids loved being so close to the park, met lots of new friends and absolutely loved the swimming pool.

不喜欢: Caravan pitches on the small side and you weren't allowed wind breaks.

喜欢: Really clean and tidy site, good dog walking area and right on Tissington trail. The toilets and showers are good and the swimming pool is free.

不喜欢: If anything, the Elsan point is a bit of a trek from the camping field. It would be better if there were one next to the toilet block.

喜欢: Friendly staff, clean and well laid out pitches, attractive, hilly location near Tissington Trail, Dovedale and Ashbourne, great children's play area and safe for small people to cycle and scooter round the site.

不喜欢: Just a few tweaks would make this site perfect.
1. Put in some family shower rooms, more hooks, seats and places to put stuff.
2. Install permanent hand driers, make sure paper towels and soap are topped up.
3. Fit a hairdryer or two.
4. Stock local produce in the shop with less emphasis on sweets!

喜欢: We loved the pod. The beds and en-suite with sink were perfect.
The pool on site was lovely, and my boys enjoyed the park too.

不喜欢: The taps were so hot it was unbearable to wash hands in, and the shower never warmed up which seemed an odd situation. I used the shower head to wash my boys hands in the sink so they didn’t burn- granted there were warning signs but this didn’t solve the issue.

Changing rooms in the pool area could do with being bigger with more showers/ cubicles but suited when it was quiet.

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
