Spending your holiday touring around South Wales and need a place to stay – perhaps within stumbling distance of a refreshing pint of ale? Then The Hog’s Head might just be the place for you. This family-run site has a number of hardstanding touring pitches at the back of a traditional pub in rural Monmouthshire, a 15-minute drive from the historic market town of Abergavenny. The proximity to the pub is only one of several reasons why staying here is a top idea. Your four-legged companion is also a welcome guest. The fully serviced pitches with water and drainage hook-up points sweeten the deal, alongside a toilet block and hot-water showers. There are heaps of interesting trails to explore in the area, starting with the long-distance Offa’s Dyke Path, which goes just past the site. You can follow it to the River Trothy, the forested banks of which are home to colourful butterflies, or pick it up by the medieval Whitecastle fortress (10 minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk along a narrow country lane). All the while, you’ll be gazing at distant views of Sugar Loaf and other peaks in Brecon Beacons National Park. If you prefer to explore the area on horseback, there are a couple of stables within a half-hour drive of the site. In addition, you can practise your swing at several local golf clubs, or book a tour (with tasting) at the White Castle Vineyard (10 minutes). Please note that the site's pub is wet trade only, and does not serve food.

Gostou Tranquility of site , showers and toilets exceptional quality and all beautifully kept . Owner and staff all very friendly and helpful and comfortable pub on site . All located amidst beautiful welsh countryside and we enjoyed cycling into Abergavenny and surrounding area , visiting the local historic sites including the stunning White Castle just a few miles away . If you are a walker , the Offa’s Dyke path runs past the campsite . All in all a really great site for us as a mature couple in a VW

Gostou Such lovely facilities and the owner was lovely and welcoming. The site has its own little “bathrooms” which was wonderful! They had radiators and such brilliant showers!!

Gostou Stayed here for one night to try out a second hand tent that was purchased.

Dale was incredibly welcoming upon our arrival, both friendly and relaxed, immediately putting any anxieties we had over our stay at ease. When we explained our situation he immediately told us not to worry as if all went wrong with the tent, he was more than happy for us to stay in one of the pods at no extra charge! A true gentleman.

The site was so tranquil and clean. Luckily for us the tent went up without issue and we were able to take in the wonderful surroundings. There are many areas of interest located within walking distance from the site, unfortunately with us staying for only one night we weren't able to venture out and about as we'd have liked, but it's already pencilled in as a must for next time.

The toilet and wash facilities are the best I've come across in a campsite, individual units, all with showers that were clean, dry, warm and decorated to a lovely standard.

The onsite pub was a bonus too, again very welcoming and just a chilled atmosphere, it had ample of choice, both on tap and in the fridge and the prices matched that if our local, not inflated just because we were on a camping site, something that happens all too often.

The lighting at night was delicate so it didn't interfere with "Dark Sky" you had dim, warm string bulbs from the entrance of the walk-way that led down to the pub and other that that it was simply sensor lights on the pods and Shepard's huts which came on briefly if you happened to walk towards the toilets. All this meant on a clear night, it's perfect for stargazers!

The night is silent, other than the wildlife. Just what you want to feel well rested the following morning.

This really is the perfect place, whether it's for a one night stop off or somewhere to stay for a few days and you're able to step out for a few hikes and take in the local area.

We'll definitely be heading back as soon as we can.

The imposing remains of Raglan Castle (20 minutes’ drive), which was partially destroyed during the English Civil War, hint at the former grandeur of this moated fortress built in the 1430s. Check out the thick walls, the Grand Staircase and the Tudor panel in the visitor centre, then have a picnic on the lawn. Head to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) for epic walks at places like Symonds Yat, where you can get sweeping views of the River Wye. If you’re into watersports, there are numerous outfits renting out paddleboards and canoes, or check out the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo. Hereford (45 minutes) is renowned for its elegant cathedral, home of the Mappa Mundi, a centuries-old map of the world decorated with drawings of strange peoples and mythical creatures.
