Those who fancy a peaceful holiday in a wild, quiet part of southern Denmark (and perhaps with a little island hopping around the Great Belt strait) should consider staying on the largely rural island of Langeland – and specifically at Langeland Camping.
On the outskirts of the eastern coastal village of Spodsbjerg (five minutes’ drive) and a 10-minute drive from Rudkøbing, on the west coast, the site is effectively in the geographical centre of the island and within easy driving distance of multiple attractions.
These include beaches such as Spodsbjerg (five minutes) and Ristinge (25 minutes). The former is a top spot to admire the sunrise (if you’re up at the crack of nasty, that is…) and has shallow child-friendly waters; hit the latter if you are into sunsets and watersports, from paddleboarding to kitesurfing. Keen hikers head to the forest of Fredskoven (10 minutes), where they might wander among ancient beeches and oaks, spotting woodpeckers and kingfishers. The long-distance Archipelago Trail makes it possible to combine walking with spectacular coastal views.
And for those who are not feeling quite so energetic? Langeland Camping comes with a small fishing lake where the kids can get an introduction to angling. Also on site are several friendly and curious goats, and they’re happy to be petted – and fed, of course. You're welcome to set up a firepit on site; the site experiences starry nights when the conditions are right.
The site comes with a toilet/shower block, a washing-up area and a launderette. There is a communal fridge freezer to store anything you might need for the barbecue (provided), though should you decide to eat out, there are plenty of dining options in Rudkøbing.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
Stroll around the market town of Rudkøbing, with its cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured houses, stopping at cosy cafés, before heading to the marina, where you can admire the huge bridge connecting Langeland to the small island of Siø.
Tranekær Slotsmølle (15 minutes’ drive) is a working windmill with far-reaching views of the countryside and the sea from the outdoor gallery. Just a 15-minute walk away is Tranekær Castle, a hilltop red-brick structure whose elegant halls can be visited as part of a guided tour.
In the southern tip of the island, Langelandsfort (25 minutes) explores the history of Denmark during the Cold War years. Check out authentic underground bunkers or climb aboard a submarine. Displays also include weapons and military vehicles, plus a section of the Berlin Wall.
