No need to get in the car to visit historic Tintern Abbey – it’s roughly an hour’s walk away across the scenic countryside of the Wye Valley National Landscape; your reward is the spectacular abbey, a vineyard to tour and perhaps a crafty pint in one of the local pubs. If you’re after other hikes, Offa’s Dyke Path passes right by the site; turn south for views of Tintern from the Devil’s Pulpit rock formations (about an hour). 
 If you’d rather get around under pedal power, hire an e-bike on site; the owners have mapped out routes following quiet country lanes along the Wye Valley to Symonds Yat (90 minutes’ ride) or the mysterious, moss-encrusted walkways at Puzzlewood (two hours) in the Forest of Dean. Happily, you may encounter several pubs for pitstops along the way. The border town of Chepstow (20 minutes’ drive) has a mighty hilltop castle to explore, and there are shops and pubs aplenty at Monmouth (25 minutes), where you can cross the River Wye on a 13th-century bridge with an imposing gatehouse.
