  • Spacious and peaceful site with lovely Brecon Beacons views
  • Within half an hour's drive of hill walks, canoeing and horse riding
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and the Hay Festival site
Question: what do bookworms, mountain bikers, hikers and heritage railway buffs have in common? Answer: they should all be making a beeline for Borders Hideaway Holiday Home Park in Herefordshire: this small but spacious site is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, under five minutes’ drive from the village of Clyro and 10 minutes from the antiquarian book browsers’ haven of Hay-on-Wye. If you want to load up with paperbacks and hide away in the hills perusing them, this site’s a suitable venue, with space and solitude, country views and a sensory garden to soothe your other senses. It’s also a comfy base to come back to after days filled with active stuff in the area; there's a splendid combo of hot showers and hairdryers in the bathrooms. With an eye for the small but significant details, the kids’ playground is centrally placed so grownups can keep an eye on younger party members while they continue sizzling sausages (barbecues are permitted on site)… or savouring their stacks of paperbacks.

Liked: Beautiful site, well kept and toilets immaculate. The play area was well maintained and lovely walks around the park. Close to nearby town and pubs etc. WiFi signal was good.

Disliked: Pitches aren't perfectly level but not too much of an issue.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Absolutely pristine campsite. The owners are very friendly and work so hard to keep it looking so pretty and so clean and well kept. It's in a gorgeous and quiet location with wonderful views. The showers are modern, clean and lovely and hot! Short trip into Hay-on-Wye which I could easily visit every day for a year! We have booked to go back later in the year. Would definitely recommend

Electric grass pitch (family)

Liked: Without a doubt one of the nicest campsites we've been too. I was apprehensive of there not being a shop on site, but that was all forgotten about once we were there. It is such a peaceful and remote location that you realise you don't need anything else. The facilities were absolutely spotless, all day everyday. All pitches face the park in the middle which is very handy. The owners onsite were extremely kind, polite and helpful. We would always see them around cleaning up and doing general maintenance of the campsite. Within the area, there are plenty of walks to do and is super close to Hay-on-Wye which has all the shops and restaurants you need.

Electric grass pitch (family)

Liked: Myself and my boys have been to quite a few places camping and have to say this is one of the cleanest we’ve stayed at. From the toilet/shower blocks to garden maintenance, every inch is very well maintained and the attention to detail there goes a long way. We had everything we needed to enjoy a simple camping trip. We will definitely return soon !

Disliked: No negatives ! 👌🏻

Electric grass pitch (family)

Liked: The site is immaculate with real attention to detail when it comes to keeping everything looking neat and tidy. We were met on arrival and shown to our pitch (actually given a choice of pitches and told to choose what we preferred). The couple managing the site are very friendly and helpful. The shower / toilet facilities are the best we’ve used at a campsite. Spotless and modern. The site was quiet when we were there, so the whole experience was very peaceful. We found some lovely walks in the area and did the walk to Hay a couple of times (for the shops and pubs). Also drove to Brecon and found some great walks around there. We will definitely return. Would thoroughly recommend for those that like hilly walks in beautiful countryside.

Local attractions

Once you’ve filled your boots in Hay-on-Wye’s numerous bookshops, there’s more to do in town, including exploring the castle, strolls and picnics by the river, and fortifying stops in the many hostelries and eateries. If you fancy further river ventures, make for Glasbury (10 minutes' drive away) to hire canoes and kayaks for trips down the Wye. Should you prefer the ease of an engine-driven craft, the base at Llangattock (40 minutes) has cruisers for daily hire. If it’s walks at height you’re after, Talgarth (15 minutes) is a starting point for paths up the Black Mountains’ highest peak, Waun Fach; for gentle wooded wanders with a waterfall at the end, plus wildlife spotting on the way, head over to the Pwll y Wrach nature reserve (20 minutes). To see the Beacons on horseback, there are treks of various lengths from Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (25 minutes), as well as indoor climbing and high up zipwires and rope walks both inside and out. If that’s not energetic enough, Oakerwood Leisure (40 minutes) has pastimes like paintballing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting to get the adrenaline pumping. Historical type? Clamber round ancient sites like Crickhowell Castle and Llanthony Priory (35 and 45 minutes), puff through the hills on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant (50 minutes), or descend deep into mining heritage at the Big Pit National Coal Museum, an hour away.
