  • Peaceful and secluded farm site on the banks of the River Severn
  • Private stretch of river and pond available for fishing
  • Breakfasts and café on site; firepit hire available
What a lot there is to do around this peaceful and secluded Mid Wales site a short hop from the Wales/England border. And you may well like to start with some fishing right there on Brook House Farm Camping and Caravan Site’s own stretch of the River Severn – in a lush countryside setting between Welshpool and Shropshire’s county town Shrewsbury. You may be meandering between countries on day trips but one constant in all this is the pristine views on site, with the park set in pretty countryside on the banks of the River Severn with buzzards and the occasional red kite soaring overhead. A spotlessly clean shower block is to hand for guests' use, along with a washing-up area on site. The site is based in the grounds of the Brook House Farm B&B, where you can have breakfast. Or tuck into nosh at the café, use the squeaky clean on-site kitchen, or hire a firepit to sizzle supper under the stars.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The open pitches, clean toilets/ showers and excellent on-site cafe serving lovely coffee and fresh cakes. We had a campfire both nights, great to have have this option available.

Disliked: The cost of taking a dog was excessive (£3.50 per night), especially as there was only one other caravan occupied on the site

Lodge (no pets, twin)

Liked: Leaving

Disliked: My friend and I were walking the Severn Way.
On arrival, we found no noticeable reception office.
We eventually located the cafe/ bar and after waiting to be served, found out from the 'owners' where we were staying. We were given directions but not told where facilities; toilets and showers were to be found.
Having found the 'lodge' my friend immediately went looking for toilet/showers. There are sited 120 metres from the lodge, uphill.
There he was verbally accosted by a gentleman who referred to himself as 'The Boss' and directly and abruptly accused of trailing mud into the shower.
My friend denied responsibility. He hadn’t entered the shower and had no towel or sponge bag with him.
The Boss told him to use the mop next time, clearly not having believed him.
This we suggest is not the surly and offhand welcome to give customers and we could only imagine that The Boss was having a bad day

The lodge itself was as expected quite basic.
The door wouldn’t shut
The lighting was inadequate
The duvet was summer weight (our stay was in late October)
The lodge was quite cramped
Even though there was a small bedside table there was nowhere to store backpacks etc
As mentioned, the toilets are 120 metres away, uphill.

We left as soon as there was enough light and hope never to return

Local attractions

Lace up your walking boots: with Brook House Farm midway between Welshpool and Shropshire’s county town Shrewsbury, it’s a shrewd place to stop to see the Shropshire Hills and Mid Wales on an active family hol. Shropshire has over 3500 miles’ worth of right of way paths for longer distance hikes and shorter strolls; the 210-mile Severn Way passes along nearby for taking a hike along it on a day trip or stopping off at Brook Farm if you’re attempting it all. The Offa’s Dyke Path can be accessed from here too: the very helpful Brook House Farm owners can arrange a shuttle bus for you to join the trail if you let them know in advance. For less tired feet, a plethora of outdoor pursuits within easy reach of the farm includes horse riding, mountain biking and golf; paragliding and lessons are available at nearby Rodney’s Pillar and the Long Mynd. Land some slippery characters by casting off on the River Severn: Brook House’s own stretch of river yields barbel into double figures, but there are shoals of other nearby spots to land salmon, trout and grayling. There are some commercial fisheries within 20 minutes’ drive to thrash things out at too, such as Weston Pool near Oswestry. Once you’ve cleaned off your catch and soothed your sore feet, jump into the car for some historical highlights: the medieval fortress Powis Castle with its famous French and Italian garden; Shrewsbury Castle with the Shropshire Regimental Museum Trust; the Red Castle and Grotto Hill of the 18th-century Hawkstone Historic Park & Follies, and the town of Shrewsbury, with over 600 listed buildings.
