The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches and a modern shower block on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open Friday to Sunday) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

Litton Lakes gets a thumbs-up for its scenic setting, helpful staff, and generous pitches. The lake's a big draw for swimming and paddleboarding, with the cafe and local pub also scoring well. Facilities are mostly tidy, though some guests mentioned weak water pressure and dim toilet blocks. While many find the vibe chilled, a few reckon it gets a bit hectic and loud, especially with bigger groups. Most agree the loos and showers could do with a sprucing up.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Loved The lake (of course and especially in the peace and quiet early in the morning before 9.30 when the day visitors arrive en masse and after 6 when most have gone home), the darkness and the stars at night, the peaceful countryside surroundings, the easy footpath to the pub, the ecofriendly off grid ethos, kids loved the tractor to climb on, felt safe and child friendly

Disliked The campsite was much bigger and busier than I expected from the website and pitches packed in close, which detracted from the peaceful quiet getaway I was anticipating, felt like at least double the size, there was often a (short) queue for the shower or toilet and the hot water was flaky and intermittent, with no temperature control

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Everything about this site, bar the showers (see ‘disliked’). We visited on August Bank Holiday weekend - Probably one of the busiest times of the year. The site was clean, the toilets were replenished regularly, the grounds were maintained to perfection. I’ll definitely visit again. The lake was crystal clear, and plenty big enough for all the guests to freely enjoy. There is a HUGE dog walking field, and a pub just a few minutes walk away. The pitches are nice and level, the on site wardens are friendly. Fire pits are available for hire (I would recommend- They are fantastic), but take your own logs, kindling and fire lighters (the site do sell these, but naturally they are a little over priced). There is no WiFi on site but I had no issues whatsoever getting hood reception on my phone. Also there is lots of opportunity to pitch and spend time either in the sun or in the shade of the trees - This made it comfortable over a hot weekend.

Disliked The showers - These are solar heated so morning showers are very cold, and when the water has warmed up and a few people are showing at a time, the water is less than a trickle. I ended up washing with warm water in my tent, as it really was not feasible to use the showers provided. This really does need to be improved to make it fully 5 star site (or a full 10 star review). But don’t let this put you off staying (as I said - I will visit again), but make provisions (I plan to take my own solar shower next time). On a final note (if your being really picky), the cafe has limited opening hours - This seems like such a missed opportunity (perhaps it is linked to their licensing?). But if the cafe could cater to more demand, have longer opening hours and provide a fuller menu I think it would really compliment the site.

Liked Our 4th stay here. Loved the lake and the quiet camp site. Briliant for families and groups.

Disliked New shower block was a welcome improvement but the water pressure needs looking as at times was awful. If you timed it right though the showers were great.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lake. Campsite overall. Host. quietness.

Disliked Facilities are new but no hand dryers in any form. No option to put something next to sink (e.g. toothpaste). No warm water and closed cafe during our stay due to technical problems. Value for money ration wasn't that good overall.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The campsite is lovely, small, clean and chilled out. We were able to camp as a group around our fire pit, which is always nice. Everything was easy. Lake was great fun.

Disliked The water pressure in the showers made them virtually unusable. The reason was explained to us and we understand they'll be changes made for next year. We still had a great stay and the new shower block looks great.

Liked Pretty much everything 🙂 The lake being the star of the show. Kids absolutely loved it and so did we. An amazing hidden gem. We honestly cant wait to come back.

Disliked Prices in the cafe very steep! But aside from that we have no complaints.

Liked This site is small and well run. We found the facilities good and well kept. The lakeside position makes it special. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The on-site cafe is nicely positioned with views across the lake.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We love Litton lakes, we’ve visited lots with day passes but this was our first camping stay.

Easy to check in, the new toilet block is smart and a welcome addition.

The new jetty and edging to the lake is really smart.

Disliked The cafe prices are I the expensive side with a limited menu. Coffee isn’t great either.

Lots of the taps didn’t work in the new toilet block. I think at one point only 2 taps out of 6 worked.

The jetty needs some bone slip gripping on it, we watched numerous children hit the deck very hard, including one child smacking their head. Please supervise your children in this as it gets so slippery.

A couple of noises campers.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
