The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open every day but Tuesday and Wednesday for most of the year, and every day during the summer holidays) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

This campsite offers spacious pitches in a beautiful location, renowned for its lovely lake which is ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities (especially the new shower block), and a relaxed atmosphere. A short walk leads to a welcoming local pub. While generally well-received, some feedback highlighted intermittent water pressure in showers and occasional noise from other campers.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly welcome to a calm & peaceful campsite. Pick of where to set up from 2 fields so we could be with family, no queuing for toilets, showers or washing up facilities, plenty of space. The lake was amazing & that we were able to bring our own paddle boards or the option to hire if needed, plenty of space & picnic tables around the front of the lake & more secluded sections for picnicking around the lake. Everything was clean & well looked after. We all had an amazing time & the kids have already asked when we can return!

Disliked The temperature of the showers was really dependent upon the time of day so there were mixed experiences in our group from lovely & hot it breathtakingly freezing. Luckily it was a super hot week so the cold showers weren’t too horrific. Showers themselves were really clean.
Would have loved a mirror at the shower hut which I think could be easily achieved. There were mirrors in the toilets closest to the lake.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked Location is the star of the show here and the helpful and friendly staff. Lots of space around pitches. Definitely a hidden gem. Super clean and tidy (new shower/toilet block), everyone respectful of the rules as quiet after 9pm. The lake is stunning, lots of space and shady areas.

Disliked More of a suggestion than a dislike. We came in the heatwave so a share fridge onsite would have been useful. Cafe is a little pricey and closes mid afternoon. Definitely on weekends and school holidays there is the opportunities for owners to do a bbq or provide some kind of evening catering.

Liked Lake is AMAZING
Paddle board hire
Walkable to a lovely pub
Lovely surroundings including streams
Chilled site
Toilets were kept clean
Wood delivery and lovely fire pits.
Easy check in friendly warden.
Large playing field
Surrounded by nature so quiet enough at night to hear owls etc.
park by pitch
Lots to do in the area

Disliked This is a good site for the heatwave and we would defs return due to the lovely lake, we had a fantastic stay- however
Facilities could do with improving, lack of water pressure in showers, lack of lighting in bathrooms, no mirrors, hair dryers or hot water in the larger washroom. Bins recycling labelling/system could have been better as it was mentioned on arrival.
As far as I am aware Only one or two drinking water taps which meant refilling at the washing up area.

Missing a trick by not stocking more items such as ice, bbq items etc.

Lack of shade on the pitches however saplings have been planted so hopefully this will give some benefit in time.

Liked Location is amazing, lake is brilliant for kids, really friendly staff, great cafe on site.

Disliked The site had been extended and now seems overun with very large groups staying up until the early hours playing music and ignoring the rules. The lady who runs the site was aware of the noise and commented that it also kept her awake at night!!!....also kids playing football at 6am was not welcome.

Disliked Ran out of cold drinks, food very quickly. Weather forecast for bank holiday weekend extremely hot. No ice-creams or lollies available to buy for children or water. Ran out of ice for iced drinks. Close cafe very early in the day.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
