If you like to be able to wander out of your site and find a pretty footpath – and/or one leading to a pub or a place to eat – then a Dorset break at Farrs Meadow should suit you rather well. This peaceful site is in a hillside spot surrounded by woodland, and it’s only a few minutes’ walk along a footpath to get to the banks of the River Stour, where guests can picnic, paddleboard, go fishing or venture into the water for a swim or a paddle. Set off in a different direction across the fields and as promised you’ll soon arrive at a pub in the cute village of Pamphill. There’s a fab range of beers here but it’s drinks only so if you’re after something to eat you’ll want to carry on into Wimborne (20 minutes’ walk), a market town that’s got plenty of choice for food pubs, restaurants and cafés. Alternatively you may like to hit the shops and supermarket while you’re in town and pick up supplies for some cooking back at base – there’s a shared barbecue provided, but you’re also welcome to bring your own along if you prefer. A shared fridge and freezer are on hand to keep all your provisions fresh, and there’s also a washing-up area to deal with the aftermath. If all this sounds like something you think your dog might enjoy too, there’s good news – dogs are welcome to join you on a break at Farrs Meadow.

The goats are friendly and approachable. there are looots of chickens and chicks.

Different levels in the pitches allow some privicy from other campers.

Walking back from the pub in the evening :)

Liked: Solitude. 20 minute walk into Wimborne.

Disliked: Difficulty getting from car to camp site and back - muddy track (although grateful for the lift up to camping area with my stuff). The compost loos were really hard to find - had to ask other campers as they aren't obvious. Water supply was from a hose by the car park, not a tap, so hard to control and had to lug water up hill - path not fit for a trolley. Place generally feels a bit run down and ramshackle. Seemed a bit pricey given the lack of facilities.

Liked: Really beautiful spot on the edge of Wimborne. David was really accommodating with us arriving a little early to get to our friends wedding that we were attending near by, and was happy to drive our stuff up to the camping field (the last bit from the parking is pretty steep!) and seemed like an all round nice guy.

Disliked: No complaints!

Liked: Location was amazing. Such a wonderful view from the bottom shepherds hut paddock. David, the host, was very kind enough to let us pitch our quick getaway tent in this field due to no other occupants and we were only staying onsite for a total of 12 hours.

Despite arriving about an hour later than planned, David was enthusiastic about our stay, chatted about why we were not cold having driven with the roof down on the car, talked to us a little bit about the amenities of the site and gave us the best tour he could give, considering it was pretty dark at that point.

Total credit to the campsite.

Camp fire was no issue, absolutely massive fire bowl already provided.

We got woken up by cockerel’s and hens. This isn’t a complaint. They woke us up by surrounding the tent like an angry gang of clueless birds. We accidentally left a box of 5 chicken selects which one particularly hefty guy with dark brown, almost black bits, scoffed down in record time. I’m sorry David! This wasn’t an intentional attempt at the plucky rooster to engage in mild cannibalism I swear!

David invited us to return any time we like. We’re in the area very frequently so as time and weather allows, this may well become a regular place to bed down in peace and quiet for the night.

It has no WiFi, but, who cares. This is a site to switch off from it.

Disliked: That’s easy! The driveway from the main road (itself a pain in the… yep) is basically unstable surfaces meets steep bits meets random deep idents in the surface. It’s pretty winding too. Rear wheel drivers beware, you’ll want less torque more traction for this bad boy. Slow and steady will win that race. I can imagine it changes during rainfalls too. Just something to bear in mind.

Local attractions

Wimborne is a handy central location for all sorts of days out around Dorset – perhaps a day on the beach in Bournemouth, a trip to Brownsea Island from Poole Harbour or a wildlife-spotting walk through the New Forest National Park (all about half an hour’s drive away). There are family attractions galore too – the likes of Farmer Palmer’s Farm Park (25 minutes), Adventure Wonderland (35 minutes) and the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park (25 minutes) are perennial favourites. Heading towards the Isle of Purbeck, The Tank Museum and Monkey World-Ape Rescue Centre (both half an hour) are also good options. A little closer to home, you can head up into the lower stretches of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to see the Iron Age hillfort at Badbury Rings (10 minutes) or explore the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy estate (five minutes), home to a grand Italianate mansion and a Japanese garden. Wimborne (five minutes) is worth a wander too, to see the minster and the model village.
