  • Family-run farm site at the foot of Whinfell Beacon
  • A 25-minute drive from Windermere; 15 minutes from Kendal
  • Hiking and cycling nearby and five miles from the Yorkshire Dales
With the Lakes on one side and the Dales on the other, it’s no surprise that hikers and cyclists find themselves so nicely placed for take-off at Cockin Farm Campsite… The family-run farm is tucked in a gorgeous spot at the foot of Whinfell Beacon, surrounded by slopes of grazing cows and featuring sunsets that will surely have you looking forward to golden hour drinks all day. It’s a 15-minute drive to Kendal, with its climbing centre, shops, restaurants, weekly outdoor farmers' market and the Brewery Arts which hosts live comedy, music and cinema. The farm is on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park, so whisk yourself westwards to the lovely Lake Windermere (25 minutes' drive) for walks along the shore, watersports or a visit to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere. All this, and you still haven’t heard it all… because Cockin Farm Campsite is dog-friendly and just six miles away from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where there are miles of moors, slopes and valleys. Plus, this small slice of the countryside often has barn owls flying over the fields, as well as other wildlife like hares. Disconnecting is very much encouraged – not that you’ll need much encouragement other than the idea of tasty barbecues and evenings spent around a firepit (both are welcome on the farm). To help you along with such things, there's a small shop on site selling essentials like water and logs, along with local produce such as honey and eggs. The site is a Wanderlust Camping Club certified site, so the additional fee added onto your booking gives you membership to other eco-friendly stays across the UK.

What customers say

A peaceful, eco-friendly spot with awesome remote views. Campers love the friendly owners, clean facilities (showers are warm!), and campfires. Farm track can be a bit rough, but it’s a quiet, natural escape with animals – perfect for chilling out.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked Absolutely stunning campsite. We did a few beautiful walks and also visited lakes nearby from here. Facilities are basic but clean! Showers lovely and warm.

Disliked Not a dislike just consider when booking roads are narrow, bumpy hilly as expected in this area!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quiet, remote location but only 15 minutes from Kendal and supermarkets.
Friendly owners.
Scenic walks straight from the campsite.
Campfires allowed.
Close enough to visit the Central Lake District.
Good washing up and shower facilities available.
Variety of animals on site.
Very reasonably priced.

Disliked Personally prefer the style of compost loo without the separator bowl and with sawdust but not a big deal.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the lovely feedback

Local attractions

In the Lake District National Park, there are lots of lovely lakes like Windermere (25 minutes’ drive) to explore. Being the largest and longest lake in the Lake District, it offers a variety of activities including rowing boats, sailing trips, gorgeous walks and delicious coffee shops on its shoreline. For a peaceful stretch of the legs, try the path along the west shore of Windermere from Ferry House to Wray Castle (otherwise 45 minutes), a turreted Gothic Revival house from Victorian times with lake views and woodland trails. It's not just the lakes that you’ll want to explore, however stunning they are. Rydal Cave (45 minutes), a man-made cavern in an old slate quarry, is a great pitstop on your rounds over at Rydal Water, often visited by the poet William Wordsworth. As for the Yorkshire Dales, one of the closest spots for guests at Cockin Farm Campsite to explore is Cautley Spout (35 minutes), the highest waterfall fully above ground height in England.
