  • Spectacular views in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • A five-min drive from Derwent Reservoir; 30 from Durham and Newcastle
  • Barbecues and campfires allowed; pub and restaurant right next door
No need to go far to conjure up magical views from Northumberland’s Bolbec Manor Campsite: it overlooks Muggleswick Moor and is on the north-eastern edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a wildlife and walking haven making up the second biggest AONB in the country. As you’d expect, outdoor adventuring is all around here, from moorland hikes over the North Pennines and further west around the Yorkshire Dales National Park, to roaming the paths of Muggleswick woods to the south. The Derwent Reservoir, one of England’s biggest inland waterways, is five minutes’ drive away for sailing, windsurfing and lakeside cycling; fishing and golf are close by, and city days are easily sorted at Durham and Newcastle, each 30 minutes’ drive away. Bolbec Manor has toilets, shower facilities, a washing-up area and chemical disposal. Barbecues and campfires are allowed; the nearest shops are at Shotley Bridge five minutes’ drive away and Consett within 10. As a peaceful site, no loud music is allowed (the soundtrack here will be provided by the hens that scratch about on site). Please note that tents staying for three nights or more should be relocated after the third night.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: A lovely little site with great views, there is a nice country pub right next door to the site that does nice reasonably priced food. The showers and toilets are kept spotless and the owner could not be anymore helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. Our second visit here and definitely won’t be our last.

Disliked: None.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Loved the size of the pitch allowing plenty room for our dog. The lady on site explained that there was a dog walking field beside the children’s playground which was about a 15-20 min walk which we could give the dog a good run on which was a massive bonus. The site was very quiet which is what we were looking for and had a pub just at the entrance although the sign said dogs weren’t allowed but I think that was just in the dining area. Toilet and shower facilities were really clean with the chickens tucked away in the back. We will definitely stay again thank you.

Disliked: This is a suggestion not a dislike… a hose pipe would be good to clean messy dogs like ours not sure if one was available but I didn’t see one.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: I loved the wild flowers and overgrowth, they made your pitch feel more private whilst still maintaining the natural beauty of the site. The views are outstanding and just a short drive to the beautiful Derwent water. Dogs allowed in bar and toilets not too bad at all. Owners very welcoming and personally showed us to our pitch on arrival.

Disliked: Site was not secure - no gate to entrance. We had a rather unpleasant experience whereby 2 very drunk lairy campers pitched up next to us at 2am. Noise was nowhere near kept to a minimum, neither in the pitching or for 2 whole hours after. They carried on with their mates on the phone, slammed car doors, cackled and talked, as though it was late afternoon in Wetherspoons. Notified owners who apologised and promised it should quiten down, but it never did, until they fell into a drunken slumber at 4.30am. Possibly the most inconsiderate people I have ever experienced whilst camping. Do think the owners could have done more or even stopped them pitching so late at night. Owners told us they had a car breakdown (presumably near a pub!) and were not aware they were arriving so late. We were so fed up, we considered leaving in the night, but didn’t want to cause the other campers any more unrest, it just was not fair on any of us at all. Gobsmacking

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked: Nice friendly helpful owners. A lovely site, plenty of wildlife friendly areas. Liked the way that all the pitches were cordoned off, in their own space with plenty of room plus nice and flat. Good amenities although didn’t use the showers. Would definitely recommend and return.

Disliked: If being picky would be the fact there were no hand drying towels in the toilets.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass tent or motorhome pitch (large)

Liked: The site was well maintained with a beautiful view. Plenty of room for each pitch. Most had hedging around the pitch so plenty of privacy. Plenty of water taps all around Toilets and showers were nipping clean. On arrival ring the number and someone comes out and walks you to your site. On the way into the site there is the pub and the meals were delicious but if you have a dog book in advance as only 5 tables in the bar where you can bring your dog. Sunset was beautiful A fabulous site that we will visit again

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Local attractions

An easy – and recommended – first stopoff is Derwent Reservoir, in a handsome setting a few miles from Bolbec Manor. Take a hike (or stroll) on the well-maintained paths to Pow Hill Country Park on the south shore or Millshield picnic area on the north, or take the longer bike route around the reservoir covering some local roads as well. Drop into the visitor centre for info, the key to the bird hide on Derwent’s western edge, or a fishing permit: Derwent is a popular pick for Co Durham trout fishing. Around the North Pennines AONB, it’s well worth the 45-minute drive to Ninebanks near Hexham to access Isaac’s Tea Trail, a circular 37-mile route from there to Alston via Allendale and Nenthead. The same distance to the south and also well worth the drive is the famed waterfall of High Force, where the entire River Tees plunges 21 feet over a cliff; get to the waterfall via the Pennine Way stretch crossing the Moor House Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve. Also to the south, the market town of Bishop Auckland is home to Auckland Castle and its 800 acres of parkland, and to Binchester Roman Fort (this is Hadrian’s Wall land), a Roman fortress on the banks of the River Wear. Somewhat more modern history is at Durham and its must-see stunning cathedral.
