  • Peaceful park just off the Glenn Highway at mile 135
  • Half an hour's drive from the Nelchina and Matanuska glaciers
  • Covered charcoal and propane grills for cooking in all weathers
Wild about wilderness but keen on great facilities too? Slide your ride along to Slide Mountain Cabins & RV Park, just off the Glenn Highway at mile 135 an hour from Glennallen. Not only is this a good stopping point on the route from Anchorage to Tok or Valdez, it’s also a fab place to settle for a few days taking in Alaska’s epic landscapes. Hiking, fishing, wildlife spotting and fossil hunting can fill your days in the wilderness and mountain ranges surrounding the park, and there can be few places better to (literally) chill out than the Nelchina and Matanuska glaciers half an hour's drive away. At the end of the day, any remaining energy (here’s looking at you, kids) can be expended at the playground or with games and general running about on the huge grass play area. Then cook your dinner on the communal grills and snuggle up around the fire ring as the stars come out overhead... the resort is so far from noise and light interference that you should be treated to a dazzling display on most clear nights. Even more cosily, the pavilion is the place to be for relaxing by the fire with a book or a game; charcoal and propane grills are here too for all-weather catering. It’s highly recommended to bring your provisions with you to the park: the nearest supermarket is a 50-minute drive away and it will take you half an hour to get to a restaurant. This is, after all, the wilderness...

Local attractions

Head out on foot to see the best of the wild landscapes – the park is located in the Eureka trail system and has miles of hiking trails to explore within a 15-minute drive. You could also take the 10-minute drive to Slide Mountain to look for fossils, or maybe hit the trails in search of the Nelchina caribou herd. Lakes and streams all around offer excellent spots for fishing – ask site staff for advice on the best places and you could be hooking rainbow trout, dolly varden and arctic grayling ready for the grill. Glennallen an hour away is your place for salmon fishing trips or to join rafting or canoeing excursions; you can also join jet boat wildlife tours here, or take a flightseeing plane for some stunning views over the area's mountains and lakes. The best way to experience the area’s glaciers is to visit Matanuska Glacier Park, around a 40-minute drive away, where guided tours are available.
