‘Between mountain and water’ is how the owners of Moo Moo Retreat describe their Transylvania location – and a quick look at the map and/or the pics will show you that’s a very apt way of putting it. The landscape here is fabulous, with the Fagarasi mountains on one side and the scenic Olt river on the other. That means it’s a very attractive and peaceful place to settle down for a while, listening to birdsong in the mornings and spending a few hours simply watching the light change on the mountains. It’s got the vibe of a real remote setting, but in fact it’s only about five minutes' drive to the town of Avrig (a handy place to find a supermarket or a restaurant) and about half an hour to Sibiu. There are plenty of ways to fill your time in the surrounding area, whether you fancy exploring the city, taking the kids to family-friendly attractions or sticking to rural pursuits like hiking, fishing and cycling. The site is just off the E68 road and close to a couple of railway stations, so getting out and about should be a cinch. In between outings, you'll be coming back to a fabulously friendly and relaxed site where the pitches are generously sized and there’s a good list of useful facilities including a chemical disposal point, a wifi connection, a launderette and some stylish bathrooms with toilets and showers (including wheelchair-accessible facilities). The atmosphere here is nicely sociable, with a bar, a campfire area and a barbecue area where you can join fellow guests for drinks, chats and food. Dogs are welcome on site as well.

Local attractions

Keen to get a closer look at the scenery? There are lots of great trails for walking and cycling nearby (ask on site for tips) and fishing spots on the Olt about five minutes' drive away. The twisting Transfagarasan road (half an hour's drive) is another great place to explore, and a top option if you’d like a road trip. For child-friendly days out, take a look at amusement parks like Povestea Calendarului and Panoramic Park (both 10 minutes’ drive) or meet the deer at Ferma de Cerbi (25 minutes). You may also like to take in a couple of intriguing buildings nearby – the fairytale-like Castelul de Lut Valea Zânelor (10 minutes) and Brambura Park & Upside down House (15 minutes). A trip to Sibiu (half an hour) must be on the schedule too – it’s a really lovely place for a stroll, with lots of intriguing historic architectural features to look out for. Brukenthal Palace is the oldest museum in Romania, and the nearby "Astra" National Museum Complex is well worth seeing too
