  • Peaceful and spacious family site in the Maasduinen National Park
  • Near walking and cycling paths; a 45-minute drive from Toverland
  • Lagoon-style pool with waterslide, plus sports courts and restaurant
For a Netherlands holiday amid fabulous natural scenery, it’s hard to beat the Maasduinen National Park. This extraordinary place is made up of forests, wetlands, heaths – and of course the riverside sand dunes that gave the place its name. That unusual mix of habitats also means that there’s a good variety of wildlife to be seen here. There are many miles of paths through the park for walks and bike rides – and you’ll be able to access them easily from Camping Roland, a peaceful, family-friendly site just outside the Limburg town of Afferden. This place is well located for exploring your natural surroundings and also for all sorts of other outings, including historic buildings, family amusement parks, interesting towns and shopping in the city. As it’s so close to the border with Germany, you’ll be able to pick and choose from attractions in both countries. When you’re not out exploring the area, you should find plenty of ways to keep everyone amused on site too. The lagoon-style swimming pool, with waterfalls, fountains and a waterslide, is a highlight for many guests – there’s even a kiosk over there where you can buy ice creams to enjoy while you’re sunbathing on the poolside lawn. A panna court, a multisports field for football and other sports, ping pong tables, and a play area provide more entertainment option for the younger guests – and there are organised kids’ activities in summer too. Rain stopped play? Take them to the indoor play area, which has climbing areas, swings and more to explore. Ready to slow down? Head to the fishing pond or take a table at the restaurant for a leisurely lunch or dinner – indoors or out on the terrace, depending on the weather.

Local attractions

Head out on foot or bikes (bring your own or hire on site) along the paths through the Maasduinen National Park, looking out for deer, lizards and birds (plus livestock like sheep and Galloway cows) as you go. For an overview of the area, climb up the free observation tower at Uitkijktoren De Afferdense Duinen (25 minutes’ walk/10 minutes’ cycle). You may also like to take a stroll around some of the local urban areas. Afferden (five minutes’ cycle) is a nice place to start; after that, maybe off to Nijmegen (35 minutes’ drive) or Eindhoven (an hour)? Castle Gardens In Arcen (20 minutes) is another nice place to wander. Got energetic kids to entertain? Try the adventure forest and miniature golf at Speelpark Klein Zwitserland or the colourful magic-themed rides at Toverland (45 minutes). Over the border in Germany, Wunderland Kalkar (35 minutes) and Movie Park Germany (an hour and 10 minutes) are great options.
