  • Small off-grid site in the hills 20 minutes' drive from Bologna
  • On the route of Via Mater Dei and bordering a natural park
  • Simple pitches with access to campfire area; dogs welcome
Time to escape the city for a while? Or maybe you’d like a location where you can mix up urban and rural for your break? Either way, Cascina Mottainai is in a splendid location – in the Emilia Romagna hills about 20 minutes’ drive from Bologna. Bordering the Parco Naturale dei Gessi e dei Calanchi, this small-scale farm site is completely off grid, with little light pollution and lots of wildlife around – you’ll probably find it difficult to believe that you’re so close to an urban centre. The surrounding area is dotted with lakes (for fishing and swimming), streams, green hilly views and hiking trails (such as the Via Mater Dei, which is easily accessed on a path from the farmhouse). As guest numbers are kept low here, you should be in for a peaceful experience with plenty of space in which to soak up the fresh air and rural quiet. Facilities have been kept simple in order to preserve that peace, but you’ll have access to toilets, showers and wifi, plus a campfire area with a covered table and chairs nearby. Dogs and kids are welcome to come and enjoy the space with you. The town centre of Pianoro is about 10 minutes’ drive away, and a handy place to pick up supplies in the shops. There are restaurants and cafés there too, along with some in closer parts of the town (the nearest being about a half-hour walk from the site).

Liked Roberto was so welcoming and showed us round his developing off-grid project, which was so interesting.
The campsite is a little haven in the hills with lovely views, access to lovely footpaths and so quiet at night. The nightingales sang us to sleep!
I love the simple shower under the open sky.
Good luck with your project Roberto.

From the manager: Hey Lindsey, love your camper and love your style! Hope to see you again, maybe when we add the organic swimming pool :) Have a nice trip in Italy!

Liked Beautiful view and nice and quiet grounds. Camping with a few extras is nice! A small bathroom with outdoor shower, a fire pit and grill, and a small kitchen with sitting area. Lovely family that owns and cares for the place. The only thing is I would recommend bringing a canopy to give you some shade over your tent. There is one shaded site on a platform but otherwise in the sun. They do provide a shaded area to sit and eat though. Would definitely go back! Close to town for exploring or to get necessary items, but still quiet and in the nature!

From the manager: Thank you Robin, I hope trees keep on growing fast so next year we could have more shadow! Have a nice trip in Italy and thanks for your feedback :)

Liked Super friendly hosts, Roberto and M. Small site in lovely rural hillside setting. Very much enjoyed our stay in this “off - grid”sustainable set up. Cooking, BBQ, kitchen area open to all. About 7 mins drive to local station for easy rail access to Bologna. Roberto has big ideas for the site. We wish him every success.

Disliked New pitches still bedding in, so levelling ramps useful.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your review, it was a pleasure to host you these two days, we hope to see you again for the summer season and for new holidays here in Italy! Grazie mille :)

From the manager: Grazie Anna, tornate quando volete, siete le benvenute!

From the manager: [Español abajo] Hi Patricia, we are very surprised by the review, we talked together in the morning and you told us (your partner) that our space was "hermoso", so I don't really understand the reason for the two stars. I wrote you some instructions to get here, asking you the time, and you didn't answer me. I sent you some tips on what to do in the surrounding area, and you didn't even say thank you. The bathroom is cleaned regularly 3-4 times a day, the kitchen too (all shared for free for those who don't have the possibility to cook). We are not a "camping", and we don't want to become one. We are a farmhouse surrounded by nature, where there is no noise, no noise pollution and no chaos of normal campsites. I recommend always looking at the photos before booking, and also reading the description. Have a good continuation.

Liked The owners were charming…some home made bread was proffered & in the morning, an espresso :)

Disliked The only negative was the signage to the site.
We got to the bottom of a gravel road & just needed the name of the campsite to give us the confidence to ascend it!

From the manager: Hi Kim, thanks for your visit, we are working hard to improve our micro camping, and a signage will be placed very soon! Have a nice day and thanks for the suggestion!

Route directions

The site is located at number 8/16 of Via Rio Fabbiani, but it's best to set your satnav to number 8, and from there follow the signs for the farmhouse (along the dirt road that goes up on the right). Follow this road for 800/900 metres to the end.

Local attractions

There are a number of nature trails and hiking routes in the Parco Naturale dei Gessi e dei Calanchi, many of which are suitable for cycles and mountain bikes as well as walkers. As you tour, it’s worth stopping in at pretty Castel de' Britti village (25 minutes’ drive), visiting the Museum of Prehistory "Luigi Donini” (15 minutes) and seeing if you can organise a tour of Grotta del Farneto (20 minutes). There are several other protected areas around this site too, so if you’d like to explore further into the local landscapes take a look at options in Parco Storico di Monte Sole (45 minutes), or walk in the area around the sanctuary in Paesaggio Protetto Colline di San Luca (15 minutes). Other interesting options for visits nearby include the Marconi museum at Villa Griffone (25 minutes) and the National Etruscan Museum (half an hour). For a bit of city life, a day in Bologna (20 minutes) is a great call – the city is famed for its food, so you may like to eat your way round the various markets and cafés while also checking out the various historic sights.
