Sand, clear blue sea and a packed program of activities for all in the summer months: as it’s been welcoming guests for more than 30 years now, the team at Gilda Camping has become rather expert at keeping holidaymakers happy, as the well-appointed facilities alone go to show. Add to this the site’s utterly fab setting adjacent to the Borsacchio Regional Natural Reserve and two kilometres north of the little seaside resort of Rosero degli Abruzzi – for seafront stays with splendid sea views and super easy access to a private fine sandy beach – and you’ve bagged yourself quite the holiday jackpot… And as if all that isn't quite enough, a short drive will take those eager for more activity to tennis courts, outdoor pools and horse riding schools. To get to the nearby centre of Rosero degli Abruzzi, pick up your pins or rent a bike on site to pedal or promenade the path that runs alongside the beach; if you’re all out of energy, use the site's free shuttle bus service instead. Bike hire is handy too for joining one of several guided rides from Gilda: make like a local and explore the site’s coastal countryside locale – it’s highly recommended... And if you’re shy about getting sweaty, fear not: when you return back to base, you can reward your sporty self with a nice cooling dip in the sea. Continuing the active theme, beach volleyball, table tennis, table football and pétanque are also around to try on site; there's playground to keep the kids occupied, and a full entertainment and activities program runs during the summer months: sports tournaments, excursions, theme nights and parties with live music and dancing, plus a kids' club too. Food- and tipple-wise, two bars are on site – one in the main square and one by the beach – as well as an excellent restaurant: tuck into treats like homemade pizzas (to eat in or take away) and fresh local seafood dishes, and wash it all down with a quaff or several of local wines sourced from the hills that lie around the Teramo province. Gilda's amenities include sparkling and spiffingly modern shower and toilet blocks with kids' bathrooms and disabled access. Pets are welcome too in most parts of the site, and to keep their fur in the fine fettle to which they’re accustomed, they’re provided with their own hot shower facilities. How swish and pet-friendly is that?

Local attractions

The most excellent resort of Roseto degli Abruzzi lies a tiny two kilometres from Gilda, and the gentle slope of its silken sandbanks mean that you have to wade quite some way into the Adriatic’s emerald waters before having to utilise your swimming skills, thus making it a tiptop spot for young families who merely want to splash, paddle and build sandcastles. However, if you prefer your waters somewhat sportier, then all manner of active water-based pursuits are available at the harbour nearby. Also suited to both young families and fun-seekers, Onda Blu waterpark is 10 kilometres from base, while the Colle Leone Astronomical Observatory lies a little further afield at 12 kilometres. After sampling Roseto’s sands and sea, delve into its past with a visit to its medieval old quarter, Montepagano, which sits upon a hilltop several kilometres inland: historic sights to goggle at here include Door of Borea – one of the most important remains of the town’s medieval walls – the 17th-century church and its 40 metre-high bell tower, and the hilltop castle. If gastronomy is your on-hol inclination, then Roseto’s eateries are well worth a look see, with locally caught-fish dishes like as seafood spaghetti, or other traditional fare such as mazzarelle, scripple, timballo and guitar macaroni are served in foodie spots around the town After an early-morning sea swim, head to the wildlife-packed Borsacchio Nature Reserve, two kilometres from base, or kickstart the day with a 50-minute drive out to the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park – 2,914 metres above sea level – for hikes, pedals or more critter spotting.
