  • Peaceful site by the Leppinsee in the Mecklenburg Lake District
  • On the edge of the Müritz National Park for hikes and bike rides
  • Beach area, canoe hire, boat dock, volleyball and playground
If you're the sort that can’t pass by a lake without wanting to leap into the waters, Campingplatz am Leppinsee could well be the place for you. Pitch up here in a peaceful pine forest for direct access to the Leppinsee, with a beach area to make it easy to dash into the water whenever the fancy takes you (or settle on the sands for a spot of sunbathing/scenery-admiring). The lake here is indeed mighty scenic but it’s far from the only one around, for this part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is known as the Mecklenburg Lake District and home to many a watery pool. If you’d like to head out to see a clutch of them, hire canoes on site to take out on the lake, which links up with those beyond for lengthy days of paddling pleasure. The land is just as fine as the lakes – especially if you make tracks to the Müritz National Park for hiking trails and (fingers crossed) encounters with some of the white-tailed eagles, storks, ospreys and the like that glide through the skies. For town times, the small settlement of Schillersdorf is a 15-minute walk away, and the larger Mirow a 15-minute drive away for shops and restaurants. Back at base, rest your weary paddling arms, biking legs or hiking feet on quiet pitches among the trees, perhaps lighting up a barbecue to cook dinner while the small sorts entertain themselves at the play area or start up a game at the volleyball court.

Powered grass campsite

Top Urlaub gewesen.

Local attractions

Lakes, of course, but there's also plenty more pretty scenery to take in around here – the site sits just on the edge of the Müritz National Park, a generous 32,000 hectares of nature reserve to ride bikes or ramble around. If you’ve dipped a toe in the lake and declared it a tad chilly, there are warmer waters to swim or loaf in at Muritztherme swimming pool and spa (35 minutes’ drive). An aerial view of some of the forest can be had on the high ropes course at Lake Woblitzsee (20 minutes); keep feet firmly on solid ground for visits to the zoo and castle in Neustrelitz (25 minutes), the castle in Mirow and the Rechlin aviation museum (half an hour). Even on a blazing hot day in the height of summer there’s a taste of Christmas to be had at Himmelpfort Christmas House (45 minutes), where Santa hangs out while he’s doing the German part of his festive prep. He won’t be here around that time (he's not a fan of the warm days) but no doubt the nippers will appreciate the chance to get a head start on their wish lists.
