  • Peaceful and green site on a riverbank 30 mins' drive from Mâcon
  • Gourmet holidays 300 metres from the foodie town of Vonnas
  • Restaurant with traditional cuisine and regular foodie theme nights
Foodie fans – rejoice (and possibly add an extra notch on your belt). The peaceful Ain department site Camping Le Renom is a minute or two’s gentle stroll from the famed foodie village of Vonnas – yes, home to the famed Hotel Restaurant Georges Blanc… You don’t have to leave the site if you’re feeling thoroughly idle in sourcing your eats though, as Camping Le Renom’s acclaimed restaurant dishes up traditional cuisine aplenty as well as holding regular foodie theme nights. (And if you do want to stroll the few hundred metres to town for yet more eats, the Vonnas market is every Thursday morning.) Need to burn at least a little bit of all this off? Camping Le Renom has easy access to local biking routes – ask at the Vonnas tourist office for the Ain bike guide and its 28 circuits – or you could possibly totter by foot around some of the 140-kilometre Beaujolais Wine Route. Urban walks and sightseeing are a cinch from here too, with Bourg-en-Bresse and Mâcon each within half an hour’s drive. Lyon (another fine French foodie place, as you may have heard) is an hour and 10 minutes to the south. The site is set in landscaped greenery on the bank of the Renon river. Leisure options include tennis and a public pool (free to site guests) next door, as well as a multisports ground, ping pong and pétanque. You can also fish in the river waters around the park.

Local attractions

Breakfast’s a dream around here: that aforementioned famed restaurant is also home to a bakery serving fresh bread and pastries, less than five minutes on foot from the park. Pick up cheese and meat locally to boost your morning meal, or travel 15 minutes by car to the Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne Saturday market. This fab fare is also excellent for a picnic; take yours to the zoological Parc des Oiseaux in the Villard-les-Dombes, a 25-minute drive away and home to around 3,000 birds. For boozy lunches, factor in a tour around a Beaujolais vineyard or two, around half an hour from the park, to stock up on wine straight from the source. Drinks and eats done, drive over to the Royal Monastery of Brou, also 30 minutes from the site, to survey this royal mausoleum’s sculptures and stained-glass windows. Prefer to pootle closer to home? Examples of the traditional Bresse architecture in Vassan are less than five minutes’ walk from Camping Le Renom.
