- Well-equipped family-friendly site in Brétignolles-sur-Mer, Vendée
- Atlantic beaches five minutes’ drive; Les Sables-d’Olonne 25 minutes
- All-weather pool; playground and kids’ club; cycle hire; sports fields
Fancy dipping your toes in the Bay of Biscay? Maybe you’re into watersports, and looking for reliable waves and a community of fellow surfing enthusiasts? Then the western French department of the Vendée, with its splendid Côte de Lumière (that’s the Coast of Light, for those who don’t speak French) might just be the spot for you.
At Camping Cabestan, on the outskirts of the seaside resort of Brétignolles-sur-Mer (five minutes’ drive), Nathalie and Laurent have created a welcoming spot for families. Kids in particular are well catered for, with a sandy playground with climbing structures, slides and a trampoline; there’s also a busy programme of activities – from organised games, to pottery and painting sessions.
Meanwhile, the adults get their own entertainment programme, with dancing soirées, live music and sporting tournaments (you had better get good at pétanque quick, if you want to lift that trophy…). In addition to multi-sports fields covering football, volleyball and basketball, there are activities such as aquagym classes in the all-weather indoor/outdoor pool (with a sliding roof).
Do your swimming tastes run a little wilder? Sandy Plage de la Parée is a five-minute drive away; or hire a bike on site and get there in pretty much the same time – and without having to worry about finding a parking space. At Plage de la Sauzaie (five minutes or 10 minutes by bike), the kids might spend some time looking for marine creatures in the rockpools or just gaze in awe at the surfers catching big waves.

Local attractions
Take a stroll around the harbour at Les Sables-d’Olonne (25 minutes’ drive), gawping at the sailing boats and yachts moored there, then head to the sandy Grande Plage beach for a swim. Alternatively, go to the Museum of Shell, which houses several colourful and pretty spectacular examples from all over the world.
A vast area of marshes, the Regional Natural Park of the Marais Poitevin (45 minutes) can be explored by boat – either under your own steam or with a gondolier-type guide. Grab a map to navigate the network of canals, and keep your eyes peeled for birds and dragonflies.
Travel back in time at Puy du Fou (an hour and 10 minutes), a theme park with immersive shows ranging from gladiatorial combats in Ancient Rome to medieval jousting, and from swashbuckling musketeers to a ballet of water jets set to 17th-century music.
