  • Peaceful site within the Forest of Tronçais, in central France
  • Musée Canal de Berry 25 minutes’ drive; Bourges 55 minutes
  • Play areas, tractor rides and nine-hole footgolf course; pool and café
If you can imagine the geographical centre of France, you can picture the location of Champ de la Chapelle, a peaceful site stretching over 6.5 hectares in the Forest of Tronçais, in the Allier department. Spacious, shaded by tall oak trees and fully fenced for your security, the site is popular with families thanks to the many kid-orientated amenities, starting with multiple play areas (one with sandpits and swings for younger children, and another with rope bridges and ziplines for older adventurers), continuing with a nine-hole footgolf course, and progressing to teens’ club-organised activities. While the kids are busy building dens, the grown-ups can carve out some time for themselves, embracing traditional games like pétanque or chilling poolside with a drink in one hand and a book from the on-site library in the other. The main hub of the site, the café/restaurant is the place where you can make new friends at wine-and-cheese evenings or as you gather for a guided forest walk. There are well-signposted trails in the woods, so you can also explore at your own pace, hunting down the assorted sculptures scattered around. A one-hour hike (or a 10-minute drive) takes you to the village of Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais, with a swimming lake, sandy beach, several shops and dining options. This is where you can stock up on barbecue provisions for dinner; for the most important meal of the day, however, you can order breakfast pastries and fresh bread directly from the site (in high season). In terms of amenities, the site comes with separate shower and toilet blocks (including facilities for disabled guests), a launderette, drying room and washing-up area.

Liked Great site tucked away in the forest.
So quiet and peaceful. Very friendly and helpful owners.
Nice large and shady pitches, all with electric and water. Facilities good and clean - powerful showers.
Very relaxing. Pool, bar and snack bar on site and very reasonably priced €2.50 for a glass of wine.

Liked Great site - very welcoming. Facilities spotless. Spacious pitches. The pool was a welcome bonus during a particularly hot period. Children’s play area seemed to be very popular. Simon and Lorraine couldn’t do enough for guests (even gave me a lift to the supermarket!). In the evening the snack bar does food/drink (burgers etc). Laundry facilities available (very cheap - 2 euros for a wash load). Would recommend to others and definitely re-visit.

Liked A quiet campsite, Just what we needed after a long day driving through France on our way to Spain.

This site absolutely welcomes twin axle caravans despite what the Pitchup website states.

Disliked Every thing was very nice.

Heerlijk verblijf! We komen zeker terug.

Liked Stumbled upon this gem of a campsite and so glad we did! We were looking for a pit stop to break a long drive up and found this quaint place. We could only stay for a night as we already had plans but we would’ve stayed for longer. Super lovely hosts, very clean facilities and lots to keep the kids busy. It’s surrounded by stunning forest and has a back to basics vibe- true bliss!

Liked Wonderful setting and a lot of well spaced out pitches. The owner was extremely helpful and couldn’t do enough for you. The bar restaurant was opened for us and we had a lovely evening by the camp fire. Great dog walks through the forest.

Disliked Not the site’s fault but we found a lot of ticks on the dogs. Just be aware if you have dogs with you.

Local attractions

At the 13th-century Château d’Ainay-le-Vieil (10 minutes’ drive), surrounded by a watery moat, it’s possible to walk along the top of the crenellated walls, punctuated by defensive towers. The surrounding parkland includes a rose garden and several open-air rooms (chartreuses), individually styled with medicinal plants, orchards and water features. Excavated in the early 19th century, the Canal de Berry (15 minutes) is no longer navigable, but its banks can be walked or cycled. To learn more about this body of water and why it was closed down in 1955, head to the Musée Canal de Berry (25 minutes), in Magnette, where you can also hire electric and pedal boats. Bourges (55 minutes) is home to a grand Romanesque/Gothic cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the elegant Palais Jacques Cœur was erected in the 15th century by a wealthy local merchant. Track down medieval festivals (in high season) and flea markets locally. There are medieval attractions in Hérisson (25 minutes) or Ainay-le-Château (10 minutes), and Jardins des Marais de Bourges (an hour) also has tree-lined canals.
