Your head will spin with all the heady hiking and mountainous options at Bosnia's Motel Carousel. For this friendly family site right in the centre of Bosnia a few kliometres from Vitez is in a walkers' paradise that the amiable owners are happy to help you hike around: scenic sightseeing and hiking trips are arranged right on site.
And your hiking haven? Set between the medieval town of Travnik and Bosnia's capital Sarajevo, Motel Carousel is close to the Vlašić and Vranica mountains for high-up hikes among spectacular scenery – from Vlašić, you'll be able to cast your eye over much of the country. If you seek an even speedier time in these surrounds, this is top skiing country too, with 26 kilometres of slopes around the motel's Central Bosnia Canton setting.
The campsite part of the site is spaciously set just to the right of the motel, with grass pitches, electric hook-up and access to showers and toilets. Make for the motel for your munching and leisurely needs, where there's a restaurant and a café bar to keep you fed and watered, and a range of sporty options including football and billiards to work up an appetite – or you could just head off on another hike...

Disliked We booked through the Pitchup app and paid a deposit. On arrival the motel is closed and the owner had not heard of Pitchup or recognised any deposit. We had to pay 20 Euros, Pitchup app says 15 Euros. Owner has no idea how the site is on Pitchup

Local attractions
Ask your friendly hosts to accompany you on your central Bosnian hiking trip, for they know very much of what they speak. As well as the treks around the mountains of Vlašić and Vranica, other hikes highly recommended in the area are around the Kozica river canyon and its waterfalls, around the Babanovac plateau via Šantić and Kraljica, and the Galic plateau from Devečane to Ljuta Greda.
For town, village and city days, it's under 10 minutes' drive from Motel Carousel to the local settlement of Vitez, and 15 to the medieval town and canton capital of Travnik (this latter is a restful option for an hour or two if you've been hiking around Vlašić, which overlooks the town). There's also the must-see of Sarajevo, an hour and 15 minutes' drive away, for the city cathedral, plentiful parks, Bosnian cuisine, and views of the city from the observation deck on Avaz Twist Tower.
Your closest skiing is on the slopes of Vlašić, accessible from the town of Šišava about 50 minutes' drive away.
