Get an authentic Australian experience and a boutique farm stay at Splitters Farm. This dog-friendly getaway is part of a working cattle farm and rescue animal sanctuary, and it's a top spot for breaks that cater for all sorts of interests, particularly photography and food.
From this farm 15 minutes' drive away from Bundaberg, there’s easy access to more treats in the form of cafés, distilleries and a popular chocolate shop. The lush green site is a top base for exploring the Southern Great Barrier Reef too, including Musgrave Island and Lady Elliot Island, as well as getting to know the foodie scene in the Bundaberg region.
Splitters Farm is a 160-acre Queensland bush retreat with Australian wildlife all around. Take your peaceful getaway and get a taste of farm life on self-led tours (at your own pace) or guided farm tours, which go paddock to paddock to handfeed rescue animals. The place is a haven for rescued farm animals who have been neglected or who are victims of drought – there are over 400 rescue animals.
As part of your tour you can taste home-produced honey and macadamia nuts, collect eggs and learn about the history of the farm and animals. After that, you may want to chill out with a gourmet picnic hamper packed full of local delicacies or pick up the pace with kayaking, fishing or swimming in Splitters Creek. Bushwalking and go-karting are some other ways to explore this bush farm setting, four and a half hours' drive north of Brisbane.

Local attractions
If you’re in the area to taste some of its treats, then you should indeed do well out of this setting – you can learn all about macadamia farming on a tour of Macadamias Australia (20 minutes’ drive), pick your own strawberries in season at Tinaberries (half an hour) and learn about the heritage of one of the area’s main crops at Fairymead House Sugar Museum (10 minutes).
Something to wash all of that down? Head to Ohana Cider House & Tropical Winery (15 minutes) or Bundaberg Brewed Drinks (20 minutes), or pick up something a little stronger on visits to Bundaberg Rum Distillery and Kalkie Moon Gin Distillery (both 15 minutes).
Work up a bit of an appetite for all this with bowling, laser tag and escape rooms at Bundy Bowl & Leisure Complex (20 minutes) or surfing and other watersports at Elliott Heads (half an hour). Not that you have to be active at all, of course – there’s always the option of just relaxing (with perhaps the occasional dip in the sea) at places like Moore Park beach (20 minutes) or Bargara beach (half an hour).
