Breakfast baps made with local produce

  • Spacious and peaceful adults-only site with Bristol Channel views
  • Cwm Nash Beach 15 minutes’ walk; Llantwit Major 10 minutes’ drive
  • On-site bar with a weekend breakfast service; pub five minutes’ walk
Piches with coastal views, a short stroll from the beach and an even shorter one to an award-winning pub should always get your holiday vote… add in that Heritage Coast Campsite is adults-only and dog friendly, and you’ll likely hail the site as a winner. Based in Cowbridge, Glamorgan, and 15 minutes’ walk from Cwm Nash Beach along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, the site is served by Teddy’s, a welcoming spot with a well-stocked bar, a log fire to cosy up around in colder weather and a patio for evening drinks and snacks in summer. You can eat breakfast there on Saturday and Sunday – local produce is used in the cooking, while vegetarian options and decent coffees are also available. Should you need sightseeing inspo, there’s tourist information in there too. Otherwise, you have pubs serving supper in Monknash (10 minutes’ walk) and Wick (10 minutes’ drive), and live music in the local pub (five minutes' walk) at the weekend. There’s a small shop in Monknash plus supermarkets in Llantwit Major (10 minutes’ drive), where you can buy barbecue goodies to cook on firepits rented from the site; kiln-dried logs can be bought too. As well as disabled facilities, a utility room and a freezer, on-site amenities include two blocks, each with toilets, showers (there’s a small charge), sinks and a hand dryer, plus a hairdryer in the ladies’ block. Take time at dusk to listen for hooting owls and watch the sunsets from your pitch: Heritage Coast Campsite is in a wildlife haven too…

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely site, great views. Loved an evening walk to the beach and super pub close by. The site is really handy for exploring and lots of walking routes around. Liked the information booklets in the cafe for local walks.

Disliked: Not enough facilities for the number of pitches but it was a busy bank holiday.

Brook Paddock primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely location, fabulous views, friendly welcome, great little bar/cafe with sun terrace and sea views. Plough & Harrow less than 5 minutes walk with super food. Fire pit delivery and daily rubbish collection service! Sheep, lamb and horses in neighbouring fields. Excellent selection of beers, ciders, super friendly staff.

Disliked: Insufficient toilets, showers and washing up facilities. Noticed quite a few grumbles about this from other campers about this. Coin operated 5 minutes only cold showers, with broken shower head. A bit grimey, despite luxury loo roll regularly topped up. Two porta loos in lower field, grim. Needs to be a whole extra toilet block really. It's such a shame because otherwise it is a really fabulous site. Would take own toilet tent another time.

Brook Paddock primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Neat, tidy and clean site. Large, relatively flat pitches. Fire pits an optional extra. Peaceful and quiet. Good walks from site, dog friendly pub very near by. Very dog friendly campsite.

Disliked: Entrance could be better sign posted, quite easy to miss, especially when easel isn't out.
50p for shower (knew this in advance) bit outdated.... we're already paying for facilities.
David is a little obsessed with bins and recycling!
Whilst I appreciate clean facilities, there doesn't appear to be a set cleaning time. I had to shower whilst David cleaned. I didn't particularly mind but some women might find it awkward.
No phone signal (area so not site's fault) but WiFi limited to reception area. Great for digital detox, not so for arranging meet up with friends!

Brook Paddock primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Clean, peaceful , nice pub nearby, coastal walk nearby, cafe and bar on site. Lovely to have the option to hire their fire pit as was very cold at night!
Will go again

Disliked: Bit bothered by no time limit on cleaning the ladies loos and the hand drier was as one other guest put "a whisper" the disabled one was great, also paying for the shower was something I have never come across at a camp site

Powered grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: This is a beautifully kept, secluded and quiet campsite in a fantastic location for access to the heritage coast and some beautiful walks directly from the campsite. There’s also a very nice pub 200 yds up the lane which also serves food.
The bar and outdoor seating are very nice and the toilets and washing up areas are kept very clean. Wi-Fi is available in these areas.
The option of a campfire was very welcome in the evening.
We received a very warm welcome and staff are very helpful and accommodating.

Disliked: The site was quiet during our midweek stay but we would be concerned at the low number of toilets and showers for a full campsite (2 of each for both men and women). No phone signal (but that can be a blessing too)!

Local attractions

Coastal walks, beaches, museums, castles and outdoor activities are all around locally to get stuck into. If you want to stick to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, it runs for 14 miles from Porthcawl to Aberthawl and has some highly scenic walks as well as even more scenic horse rides to be had on its beaches. You can also try out one of the local surf schools or go fishing nearby at Wick (10 minutes’ drive) or Penarth Beach (40 minutes). Active types can also try their luck at TeamSport Go Karting Cardiff (55 minutes), show their true colours at Taskforce Paintball Games (20 minutes) and have a few rounds of Welsh golf; there are a couple of courses within half an hour by car. Head for Ogmore (15 minutes) or Fonmon (20 minutes) castles to swot up on some Welsh history, and add to your knowledge with a trip to St Fagans National History Museum in Cardiff (40 minutes). The National Trust’s Dyffryn Gardens (half an hour) make an interesting day out for green-fingered types.
