  • Pop-up wild campsite in a secluded valley at Coedpoeth, North Wales
  • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Park in the Past both 15 minutes’ drive
  • Car-free site with hike-in access; archery and bushcraft available
When it’s time to escape people, technology and noise, it’s time to head for Gwenfro Valley Wild Camping, a pop-up wild camping site five minutes’ walk from Coedpoeth village in Wrexham, North Wales. Get back in touch with nature and take this chance to chill with your partner or the kids (and your dogs) in an untamed, slowly re-wilding valley overgrown with trees, bushes and grasses, where you can listen to the rural soundtrack of the burbling River Gwenfro accompanied by merry birdsong. Pitches are mown into meadows and tucked into copses, with numbers limited to give you and yours complete privacy while on the campsite. While you will feel like you’re right at the end of nowhere, 21st-century civilisation is in fact just down the road in Coedpoeth, which has all the amenities you’re likely to need, from shops to pubs and takeaways. If you’re looking to super-size your wild camping experience, the site owners can organise shooting, archery and bushcraft skills sessions. As there is no vehicle access to the pitches, you’ll need to walk in from the lay by designated for loading and unloading; the pitches are 50 yards’ stroll away and free on-street parking is available in Coedpoeth. And do please note that this is proper wild camping, with no electricity, no water and no showers.

What customers say

Gwenfro Wild Camping: Secluded, peaceful nature escape. Praised for stunning valley, private pitches, stream sounds. Owners are super friendly & helpful. Basic facilities (composting toilet), but wood chopping for fires is a plus. Recommended for privacy, value, and beginners. Expect mud!

Primitive grass tent campsite (family)

Liked The location was great. Once down in the valley we felt miles from anywhere, even though Coedpoeth was just a few minutes walk away. Nick the owner was really accommodating, popped down to greet us and say hi. I went for the night with my 12 year old son, who's been desperate to wild camp for ages and this was a great introduction. We were there with one other camper who was in a different part of the valley but wouldn't have known they were there due to the layout offering really secluded private pitches. We set up camp, chilled for a bit, lit the fire and made bacon cheeseburgers...perfect

Disliked Toilet is a little bit of a challenge to get to, especially in the dark

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (solo, wild)

Liked A gem of a place. Tucked away in a valley. Tons of space - 7 acres in fact. Nick the landowner could not have been more helpful. Nice genuine guy. Had a brilliant couple of nights

As the site clearly says this is wild camping so no facilities but perfect for me. Plenty of wood to have fire which is fab

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Be prepared to walk down steepish hill with your gear.
