  • Family holiday park in the grounds of an 18th-century listed building
  • Aberdyfi 20 minutes' drive; half an hour from Barmouth
  • Play area and laundry facilities; pub and station five minutes' walk
Whether you’re getting out over rugged peaks or green clifftops, Hendre Hall Holiday Park is a fine spot for exploring the Cardigan Bay coast and the gorgeous countryside of the Cambrian mountains in Snowdonia National Park. Sitting between the two, this site is located in the grounds of Hendre Hall, an attractive listed building that dates back to the 18th century – making it a historic base for exploring the green hills that make this landscape one of the prettiest in Britain. Have your camera at the ready to capture some of the sunsets that light up the sky in the west. You may also want to take photos of the food, the hills and the many miles of spectacular coastline, including views over to the Llŷn Peninsula, Snowdon, Barmouth and Bardsey Island. With a bit of luck, you may see the dolphins that live in Cardigan Bay too. Sea and sand on your mind? That's not a surprise – the nearest beach is about a five-minute walk away along a footpath that is directly accessible from the site. Llwyngwril's other amenities, like a friendly local pub, a railway station and a small shop, are also about five minutes' walk away. There are solid on-site facilities at Hendre Hall Holiday Park too, including toilets, showers, a wash house with laundry facilities and a recycling area. Kids are very welcome here and have a playground all to themselves; dogs are allowed to come and explore the area by your side too. Hendre Hall Holiday Park is also home to pygmy goats and chickens which can be visited and fed. Please note that this is a family site and that quiet hours are in force after 10.30pm.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: A wonderful little campsite. Was about half-full when we stayed there. We travel with a one year old who likes to explore her surroundings, this campsite felt safe and friendly enough to potter around. There is a cafe and a farm shop on site, the staff is great. Train and bus stops in walking distance. Great find!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked: Such a lovely peaceful site, smallish (perfect size for us!), but with well spaced mainly level pitches, clean facilities, a little farm shop and a coffee house/bar open at weekends (more frequently in high season). There are pygmy goats, brown sheep and the cutest mini donkeys in the field next door. There's even a sauna on site that can be booked by the hour!
Friendly helpful staff around if needed.

The village has a pub, shop and train station all 5 mins walk away in one direction, while the path to the pebbly beach is 5 minutes the other way. The trains were a great way to hop up and down the coast, and there's loads of places worth visiting in the wider area.

Liked: Lovely clean site within a short walk to a stony beach with beautiful sunsets. Miniature donkeys were gorgeous. Nice cafe/bar on site.

Disliked: Pitches are too close together.
Returned from a walk to find a very large van parked 3 meters away from our unit. Owners were aware and had given permission for van to be parked so close. We believe 3 meters between units is not enough and could potentially cause problems, for this reason we will not be returning or recommending unless people don’t mind being in such close proximity to others. If pitches were bigger we would have given a higher rating.

Cwt Gwril camping pod

Liked: Excellent small and quiet site with beautiful sea views and great for sunsets, good access to the beach for walks, mainly rocky but some good patches of sand at low tide. Travelled by motorcycle and felt a safe and secure place to leave it. Glamping pod accommodation was great, very well maintained, clean, warm, spacious and modern, There is also good shelter for tents and very minimal occasional noise from the adjacent railway line, only 2 small trains per couple of hours during the day only. Railway is a great rebuke option if not wanting to drive or have an evening out in Barmouth or further afield. Station is only a short walk from the site, approx 5- 10 min walk. Overall a very friendly welcome at the reception/ shop and in the coffee shop which offers great pizzas and drinks on a Friday and Saturday night at very reasonable prices with a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for a quiet holiday with great scenery and a friendly welcome. Toilet and shower facilities basic but very clean and shower warm and very clean.

Disliked: Minor downsides were no heating in the toilet / shower facilities and no hot water tap at the wash basin.

Liked: Staff very friendly.

Disliked: Stayed one night.
Have to pay for showers,
No hot water in loos.
No drive over waste disposal unit.
Cafe and bar not open yet.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to leave us feedback. We have had to meter the showers unfortunately. Without the meters we found guests would exit the showers and leave them running - either causing flooding or just water waste. It is 20p for 5 minutes. So you're looking at 40p for 10 minutes which we feel is reasonable. Especially with the increase in water fees everyone have had. The communal wash house has hot running water for washing hands / washing up / washing machine which is free of charge as well as the communal fridge :) We have a chemical tipping point behind the concrete shower block. The cafe and bar are open Thursdays to Sundays during the quieter periods. Sorry if you stayed outside of this time and weren't able to visit the coffee shop / bar.

Local attractions

When you set down here, ready your swimming gear, as Bala Lake (40 minutes’ drive) is a fine setting for sailing, wild swimming and canoeing or hiking the hills on all sides. The kit will come in handy for exploring the Barmouth (30 minutes) seafront by paddleboard, too, or windsurfing and kitesurfing in Aberdyfi (20 minutes). If more active pursuits are what you like your holidays chock-full with, Dolgellau (20 minutes) is a good point of departure for hikes, mountain biking or climbing crags. More beach paddles, perhaps, in Tywyn (15 minutes), followed by a traditional butter bun? Perhaps your preferred way of taking in views is from a cosy seat on an old steam train, such as the Fairbourne Railway (five minutes). It’s one of several historical places you might want to seek out – others include the Dyffryn Ardudwy burial chamber (40 minutes) and the Italian-style Portmeirion (50 minutes) village. Plas Brondanw Gardens (50 minutes) was designed by the same architect that created Portmeirion.
