  • Adults-only site on Llŷn Peninsula, 15 minutes’ drive from Pwllheli
  • Direct walks to Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Goch; Caernarfon 20 minutes' drive
  • Spacious, secluded pitches; footpath to the beach; wildlife
On the northern shore of Gwynedd’s Llŷn Peninsula Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Gyrn Ddu Campsite is named after one of the two mountains that provide a backdrop to its lushly green setting (the other peak being Gyrn Goch). Nearby mountains can only mean one thing: epic walks await. And make no mistake: there are plenty of trails to explore in this area. Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Goch are both accessible on foot from this adults-only site, and the car park for Yr Eifl is a 10-minute drive away. The site also has direct access via a footpath to a peaceful pebbly beach that seems to be made for long, relaxing walks with your significant other – or for a spot of paddleboarding (you will need your own equipment). When you first arrive at the site, leave your car in the designated parking area and grab a wheelbarrow to ferry your belongings to your spacious pitch, which feels gloriously private and secluded; each is accessed via a little path cutting through the long grass. This is wild camping (or maybe it’s more accurate to say it is low-impact camping), with more than a few convenient facilities: from toilets and showers, to a washing-up area and water points. Spectacular views and the likelihood of spotting assorted wildlife (buzzards and other birds of prey, plus ducks and rabbits) complete the picture. Barbecues and campfires are allowed, and the nearest store is in Trefor (five minutes); the site is also handy for the A499, which takes you to Pwllheli and the south coast of the peninsula in about 15 minutes. Bus stops are near the site's entrance for bus route 12 between Pwllheli and Caernarfon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We stayed at the second spot. The surroundings were beautiful, with an amazing view. The campsite had a fire pit and a table with benches. The toilets were clean and well-maintained, and the showers also had hot water. There was a separate area for washing dishes, and you could buy firewood there as well.
Highly recommended!

Primitive grass tent campsite (sea view)

Liked Overall I really liked this campsite, easy to get to, stunning location and so peaceful. I love the concept of the tall grass separating each little spot as it’s much nicer than a massive field everyone pitches on together. Each spot has a fire pit and picnic bench included which is great to eat lunch on whilst watching the ocean waves.
The toilets were decent, pretty tidy and never felt crowded despite being so small. I think this helped by the limited number of people at the campsite.
The host was pleasant and gave us a lot of info on the phone when we called on arrival.
I’d definitely come back again.

Being kid and dog free was also nice.

And what’s better then sitting and watching the sunset over the ocean with mountains around you.

P.s better than Bach wen

Disliked The ocean view camp spots were close to the road which was noisy - I didn’t mind this too much but when you’re sleeping it can wake you up. One toilet for all men on campsite sounds risky on a busy day… luckily not an issue when I was there (there are 3 urinals - I’m just referring to actual toilets).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Quiet adult only site, somewhat away from the hustle and bustle of popular Welsh towns. There is a short walk to a quiet beach just done the lane also, which is nice weather would be amazing (unfortunately we didn’t really have the weather for this). Pitches are private and amenities are simple/basic but in keeping with the low impact style of camping at this site. Fires are allowed and pits are provided at each pitch for free. Firewood is available to purchase at a reasonable price via QR code in the washing up hut. Showers are small but functional with hot water. Good waste management system with clearly marked bins for rubbish and recycling. The owner is easily reachable via phone, and is happy to be contacted with any queries. We used pitch 5 with was a great location on site, however due to the weather we were a little exposed - if wind is forecast, use pitch 2!

Disliked My only complaint (and it wasn’t too much of a concern) is that the washing up water didn’t really get hot, barely warm - I merely solved this by boiling some water.

Liked Beautiful location with views of the sea and the mountains. Clean & tidy site with well thought operational organisation. The facilities are great, however the showers could do with being a bit bigger. Always loved our stays here and look forward to visiting again soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We stayed in pitch 3 which felt lovely and secluded, with views of both mountains and sea. The sunsets were absolutely gorgeous from this site, and there is also a beautiful sandy beach a short walk away.

The owners were really friendly but also left you to it; something that is always appreciated at a campsite when you want to get away.

There were plenty of lovely little moments of rabbits running up the path or having a sniff around our pitch.

The facilities were well built and clean, and the showers stayed nice and hot. There was also a fire pit in every pitch, and an honesty shop where you could get bags of firewood.

Disliked Absolutely nothing - it was perfect.

Local attractions

Exhibits at the Airworld Aviation Museum (15 minutes’ drive) span several decades, with a de Havilland Vampire from the 1940s and several post-World War II fighter aircraft. There’s also a replica of the plane with which Blériot first crossed the English Channel in 1909. Sitting on the River Seiont, the medieval castle at Caernarfon (20 minutes) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, alongside several other Welsh fortresses built by Edward I. For the best views, head across the river to the Aber Foreshore, a popular cycling route. Also in town is Caer Rufeinig Segontium, the remains of an ancient Roman fort. Mountains, valleys, marshes and forests are among the diverse and stunning landscapes at Eryri National Park (Snowdonia; 35 minutes). This is also a top spot for stargazing; or (if your interests are of the adrenalin-fuelled kind), head to Zip World Llechwedd, where you can launch across an old quarry.
