  • Spacious pitches at a family-owned site a 10-minute drive from Bala
  • Bala Lake five minutes’ drive; National White Water Centre 15 minutes
  • Fishing in the River Dee; playground; good stargazing
On the eastern fringes of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Ty Tandderwen Caravan Park is a family-run site with spacious (and well-spaced) grass and hardstanding pitches. There’s nothing but grazing land and wooded hills all around, plus mountains in the distance; and the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle rippling of the River Dee, which runs just a couple of fields away. By the way, remember to pack your rod, for both fly-fishing and angling are allowed here. Dogs are welcome too, and they might wag their tails in delight when you take them to Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid; five minutes’ drive), where they might join you on a swim or on your paddleboard exploration of the shore, or walk by your side as you stroll along forested trails, making regular stops to take in views of the water. Other hikes might lead you to the forest at Aberhirnant (10 minutes), Rhiwagor Waterfall (half an hour), or to viewpoints like Moel y Garnedd (15 minutes) and Cwm Cynfal (half an hour). Back on site, while the children burn what energy they have left in the play area, you can fire up the barbecue, having sourced your provisions in Bala town (10 minutes), where there are also several restaurants. Wherever you eat (on site or in town), set aside a good hour or so before bed for a spot of stargazing – Eryri is an International Dark Sky Reserve, and you should be in for a starry treat on a clear night.

Liked An excellent site with large flat pitches available. Not overcrowded and very clean.
The showers and toilets are very well kept.
There’s a small shop on site open in the morning and evening.
Would definitely stay again.

Disliked A little far from lake Bala with no obvious dog friendly walk to get there. We may have missed it so will gladly reserve the right to be corrected.

Liked I liked the shop. The squeaky swings. The atmosphere. My four year old daughter loved it. She met lots of friends and bala lake was great. Really beautiful. It was sad to leave. I liked you could get a barbecue and order meat aswell. It was said to leave I write this while on my break at work. Wish I was still there. Thank you.

Liked Pitch was clean, grass was level and a good size. Power was literally on the pitch so very easy electric hook up.
Facilities very clean and close.
Great fishing area, 5 minutes across the field to the River Dee where we sat and attempted to fish for the afternoon.
The site manager was very helpful and accommodating. First time camping with Husband and kids (6 and 3) we all I had a great time and plan to return.

Disliked Lights around the bathroom/shower area stayed on throughout the night, which I understood works well for safety but ruined the star gazing/night sky experience.
Play area wasn't great, it would be nice if there were more children's facilities as they have the space.

Liked What a brilliant site! We had a great stay here and didn't want to go home! The kids enjoyed playing on the swings and playing hide and seek in the dark with the other kids on site, as well as feeding the alpacas. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean, as was the washing up area. Elin, the site manager, was so accommodating and always had time for a chat. It was lovely to hear how long the site has been in the family. The pitches were level and well kept and there was a large area in front of pitches for children to play. We enjoyed the short walk across the field to the river Dee, where we attempted some fishing. The little shop on site is stocked with all the essentials and during the weekdays you were treated to flyovers of RAF planes etc which was a great added bonus. We loved how close this was to Bala Lake, where we enjoyed some fishing and paddleboarding. It was also great to experience the meteor shower whilst we were there, a great spot for star gazing! We will certainly be returning.

Liked Large and level grass pitch. EHU with water tap at same point.
Open site and although plenty of pitches it was quiet and pleasant.
The facilities are clean and plentiful. For the size of the site, you didn’t have to wait or queue to use anything.
The site host Elin was very helpful and available either in person or otherwise by mobile/text.

Local attractions

The National White Water Centre (15 minutes’ drive) is the place for high-octane aquatic adventures on the River Tryweryn – from guided rafting excursions and canyoning, to extreme independent sessions (for experienced rafters only). The industrial heritage of North Wales comes alive at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes) with guided tours of the former mines, where you can also have a subterranean round of miniature golf. If you’re after the sweet kick of adrenaline, there are also thrilling rides like the Titan zipline, which will have you flying above the area’s distinctive slate landscape. It’s a much gentler vibe at Betws-y-Coed (45 minutes), a pretty village stretching between the rivers Conwy and Llugwy, with pretty woodland walks (including the family-friendly Tan Dinas Path) leading to stone bridges and waterfalls like Rhaeadr Ewynnol / Swallow Falls.
