  • Well-kept rural Denbighshire site raising money for charity
  • A 10-minute drive to the beaches of Rhyl and Prestatyn
  • Catering on site from Friday eve to Sunday morning
Want to book yourself a break and do some good for the world at the same time? What an excellent idea – and one that you can bring to reality when you stay at Pet Rescue Fundraising Camp Site, a five-acre site in the Denbighshire countryside just outside the village of Dyserth. Profits from stays go towards funding a pet rescue charity centre, so perhaps it’s no surprise that dogs are welcome to join you for a little holiday here. Doggy daycare is available for those who need it, and all dogs must be kept on a lead and supervised at all times (and you’ll need proof of up-to-date vaccinations for your pet to stay on site to ensure that all pets on site, including the site's rescue pets, stay protected from illness). This location makes a splendid spot for exploring north Wales – a cycle path runs past the entrance with a link to the North Wales Coastal Route, and there are plenty of walks around too. Rhyl and Prestatyn are both about 10 minutes’ drive away for beach times, and there are castles, gardens and all sorts of other things to fill days with. You’ll probably get a bit of a warm glow from knowing that you’re supporting a charitable cause by staying here – and that’s likely to grow even stronger when you see the facilities that have been provided. A washing-up area, toilets and showers are all included, and you can boost your break even further by hiring a firepit, grass heat shields (these are required for firepits or barbecues) or a windbreak. Logs can be purchased on site for the firepits. And that’s not all – there’s also a catering area that serves up cooked breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks (hot, cold and alcoholic) as well as running events like pizza nights and hotpot gatherings. The catering is open from Friday evening to Sunday morning breakfast.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Very cheap, very friendly staff and owner and clean showers, toilets, food van, bar, skips everything you can ask for!

Disliked Nothing at all

From the manager: Thank you for your review as a family run site it's nice to be appreciated and our staff are valued by our campers. It was very nice to meet you and your four legged companion. By staying on our site you have helped support our Pet Rescue on site charity.
Thank you, happy camping and safe travels

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The bar area and food van were a nice treat.

The small playpark.

The sunny pitches.

Nice to think some of our fee went to a good cause.

Disliked The toilets were basic and not great.

The location. Nothing near by except the sewage works and busy road.

The arrival and parking instructions were over complicated.

The ‘warm welcome’ that was advertised was actually abrupt, unfriendly and verging on rude….as per many of the other reviews I had read, but ignored…

Not sure if it was just cos the place was so busy, or because we were 2 minutes after 7pm - .which was supposed to be the last check in time - although we did phone and speak to someone and sent 2 emails advising we were arriving 5-10 mins late…

We wouldn’t go back and wouldn’t recommend it am afraid.

From the manager: It was me you phoned about arriving being after 7 arrival and I said as long as you were here before dusk it was fine.
It was also myself who gave you pitch instruction & a map so I don't see how difficult you found them to follow or if I was rude.
You were on site 2 and as the flushing toilets are on site 1 we placed portaloo's for campers to use in the night but you could have walked a few yards to the main flushing units there are 2 very large blocks of toilets if you didn't wish to use your motorhome toilet.
I was, when you arrive serving in the catering van, sorry I was busy but I did try to explain the map & how to retrace your steps to reach your pitch, you visited the bar and I have since spoken to you via email as I had doubled the paper work and at first thought you had been unable to come, after speaking to you it's obvious you had arrived and I had doubled up on maps.
I am also sorry that you couldn't stay on site 1 where the play park & bar are but you only booked on the Thursday night for arrival on Saturday for 1 night and by your booking date we had already filled site 1.
Copied in your own words (The bar area and food van were a nice treat.) That was me also.. (not in the bar)
I do feel it is important to answer your complaints as they can give people the wrong impression. I try very hard to accommodate campers on their arrival time so I feel you are very unfair as other campers who also arrived after you with no complaints, perhaps if you had more time to look around your views would have perhaps changed. Best wishes for happy camping and safe travels

Primitive grass campsite

Liked last time we stayed here about 3 yrs ago site 2 was a pitch where you like , so requested this on booking based on previous stay on site 1 where tents were all squeezed together offering no privacy . disappointing to see site 2 is now slso rows after row of close together pitches where tents campers snd large mobile homes are all crammed in together. we were situated on 28 which whilst being ideal for facilities. which we found generally clean and good ..what we didn't like was the fact we hsd a large vsn behind us and beside then tents directly opposite leaving us with absolutely no view and feeling claustrophobic. thankfully the campers around us were very freindly or I think we would of left early. regarding the owner personally she was never rude to me however I did hear her speak rather abruptly and rude to some other campers maybe at times justified, tho. can't dsy we had a terrible camp but doubt would stay again.

From the manager: Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay this time but we have never had free to pitch were you like on site 1 or site 2, we have marked of pitch boundary's and do ask camper to stay within them. As you had a dog with you we are some what restricted to your placement as you know the rescue and dog walk area is around the perimeter of the site so we don't place dogs around the edge to save any problems. If you had approached me I could have reallocated you to another pitch.
The problem most campsites have is friends & family want to pitch together and some are in tents other in Vans or motor-homes, so it proved imposable to have just tents or vans etc separated but we can post they will be restricted to certain rows and no doubt that will then cause campers upset, it's very difficult to please all the people all the time. the pitches are a really good size 7m x 12m but tents are now so large that to is difficult to accommodate, but we can try different layouts, or restrict the pitches and raise prices Ps the rows allow emergency access to all our campers day or night if they cant access so it's better than a heart attack being reach in minutes than trying to pick a way through everyone every wear, I do hope you understand our mindset of safety first and we do hope you will consider visiting again.
Any camper is able to ask for a pitch move and where possible we will try

Venue was loverly. Facility’s and management not so great.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The pitch was a good size, well maintained grass. Plenty of space for dog and kids to play.

Disliked The toilet facility’s were very restricted at night only being one toilet available and no lights in there. The woman who locks up at night “I assume the owner” was very abrupt and to put it fairly very rude to most of the people staying. There was a large party on the last night of our stay being very roudy and agressive with each other until early hours and this was not policed. Access to pitch’s was difficult in large vehicle.

From the manager: I don't think you looked at your site map? The site 2 night toilets there are 4 are unlit you are requested to bring a torch but you could have walked a few yards to the Double blocks of illuminated toilets.
I come round at night to ask if everyone is ok and to remind everyone it 10pm quite time please stop the children running around & also to remind campers if there are any problems in the night to phone my number it on the paperwork you are given on arrival, I also let camper know the gates are also being closed to vehicle access for safety reasons, I drive very slow with hazards on and acknowledge campers as I do my rounds.
Your version of rude is giving campers information & the chap who disturbed every one on Saturday night has been banned from the site the other inebriated chap I ask to stop the children shouting and to move the goal post was infect extremely aggressive and has been issue with a warning, I can only police if campers phone in the night as I am working on site from 8 am until gates closed at 10pm so I yes I sleep at night and most campers have read the site T&C and respect them but we do occasionally get the one who don't and then they are asked to leave asap.
I am not sure what you found difficult to access the pitch as all the pitch sizes are on the booking form and if you needed more room your car could have gone in the car park as you were in a tent. Perhaps your next visit will run smoother please use the site map and best to read T&C for information best wishes Marj

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The campsite was well suited to tents with nice large pitches, flat ground and well maintained grass. Pitches were clearly marked.

Disliked The lady who runs the office is very abrupt. It's clear she doesn't actually like her job because even my six year old son commented that she didn't need to be rude to us. She also does the cooking in the on site burger van. Her cooking is no better than her customer service and I'm sure that her children had to learn to cook in self defense.

From the manager: I am the lady that runs the office & happens to be the owner and normally very pleasant to campers and very helpful and efficient not abrupt.
The catering van's food has always been very highly received by other camper's. What did you do that upset me so much as I cant remember an incident or it also could have been the extreme heat that weekend that was have an adverse effect on most people
As this was your second visit to the site the only difference was your pitch allocation.
I am the founder of Pet rescue and for the last 24 years have done everything in my power to keep this charity going and in these economical times of financial struggles I run the campsite to help the rescue survive so do I enjoy my job Yes I do.
So thank you for your comments I will strive even harder to be more pleasant and I am so glad your 6 year old has such good manners as to comment on other people it's very unusual these days so well done.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Flat and spacious pitch. Allowed campfire with mat. Quiet at night.

Disliked Not enough amenities for the amount of campers. Poor maintenance of toilets. No water for rinsing out at Elsan point. Food prep area looked unhygienic.

From the manager: Gosh that's a lot of negative comments for a one night stay in your own motorhome
perhaps it's best if I don't answers as I don't wish to be rude.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked What’s not to like? Very reasonably priced, spacious pitches, a play area for the kids. Friendly and helpful staff, lovely food (again for very a good price). Hot showers, clean toilets and you can even have a small fire if you so wish.

Disliked Nothing.

From the manager: We are pleased you both enjoyed your stay on our campsite and we do hope you both visit again. Thank you for your review and recommendations, until next time happy camping and safe travels

Local attractions

Time to hit the coast? Take your bucket and spade to the sandy beaches of Rhyl or Prestatyn (both 10 minutes’ drive), get over to Llandudno (half an hour) to walk on the pier and ride the Great Orme tramway, or continue to Conwy (half an hour) to explore the castle. For rural walks you can stay local for the 15-minute stroll to Dyserth Falls, climb the peaks of the neighbouring Clwydian Range or dip your toes into Snowdonia National Park (40 minutes’ drive). The pretty pathways of Bodnant Garden (half an hour) are well worth a wander too. This being Wales, you’re never far from a castle – the turrets of Rhuddlan Castle (five minutes) are the closest, but TV fans may like to drop in at Gwrych Castle (15 minutes) to see where I’m A Celeb was staged.
