  • Spectacularly scenic riverside park in the Tanat Valley
  • Hikes directly from the site and Lake Bala 13 miles away
  • Two dog-friendly pubs within walking distance
Cor. Have a look at this site’s setting: parked alongside the Tanat river and surrounded by peaks in the spectacularly scenic Tanat Valley in mid Wales’ Berwyn Mountains, it’s right near the pretty village of Llangynog, where the Tanat and Eirth rivers meet. And there’s more: right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, Henstent Park’s surrounds are not only scenic but they're also handily set for jaunts to the market towns of Welshpool and Oswestry, plus the Vyrnwy and Bala lakes. The smashing views are 360 here – at every turn you’ll see grass, trees and mountains – and as the site’s bordered by a river, there’s the option to have a go at fishing nearby. This is a smashing site for walkers too: several hiking trails lead directly from the site and it’s a three-hour trek (or a 20-minute drive) up to Wales’ highest waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr. A gated dog walk runs alongside the riverbank (and one dog-friendly pub is within easy walking distance). The bathroom block – with free hot showers – has been hailed by previous guests as immaculate and spotless.

Powered grass tent campsite (no pets)

Liked The site is so calm and quiet, and makes for a very relaxing stay. The camping dell is absolutely perfect; right next to the river and had only a handful of pitches. The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and modern. The owners were so helpful and friendly, they made us feel at home.

Site is a ten minute walk along walking paths, not along the road like a lot of camp sites, to the local pub. It could do with a bit of a spruce up, but was OK for a quick pint to get us out for an hour.

We had a lovely meal at the Wynnstay Arms, which is a ten minute drive away, so if recommend that.

Our kids are a little older (12), so enjoyed the more laid back vibe of this site. They loved playing in the stream, skimming Stones and building dams. There's no play park for younger children, and no space for ball games etc, so worth bearing in mind if you have younger children. That wasn't a problem for us, and actually made it a more relaxing break. We lived getting up in the morning and having a brew next to the river, with only the sound of the water, birds and sheep... Oh, and the donkey up the road that would pipe up every now and again. 😂

Disliked Nothing.

Liked A great campsite run by lovely, helpful people. The facilities were always very clean and the setting was perfect with mountainous views and a peaceful river (which we even went for a little dip in one morning). It is possible to walk directly from the campsite and there is also a small village with a pub in walking distance (though bear in mind there is no shop) Would definitely recommended a stay here.

Powered cement/asphalt campervan campsite (small)

Liked The site was spotless and pretty. The mobile homes looked lovely as they were raised up at different heights and looked nice. The stream was lovely that I was parked next to.

Disliked My spot didn’t have slabs so was slightly sloping. The neighbours had a radio on and were strumming a guitar and had a small dog who yapped too much. I had gone to have a peaceful relaxing stay.
I decided to go to the pub for tea unfortunately there was only 1 in the village and it was quite gloomy and too many flies outside so I didn’t eat there.

Liked Gorgeous campsite with fabulous views! We had a pitch next to the river which was lovely, also had a great view of the mountains. Very helpful and friendly staff who keep the site immaculately clean and tidy. Shower and toilet facilities were perfect with individual cubicles with both a shower and toilet inside for ultimate privacy. There are dvd's, books and games for guests to use which was a nice touch. Will definitely be back when we return to Wales in the future.

Local attractions

Several walks lead directly from the site, and you can lace up your boots, pack up a picnic and hike the eight miles up to Wales’ highest waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr if you’re feeling particularly energised. Other outdoorsy pursuits within easy reach include horse riding, fishing and cycling… And as the site is right near Llangynog village, you’re also well placed for challenging and spectacularly scenic bike rides around the Milltir Cerrig mountain pass along the B4391, which runs between Llan Ffestiniog and Llanfyllin. If you fancy checking out the area’s lakes, the route over the mountain to Bala – 90 minutes’ bike ride or 25 minutes by car – is a highly scenic one, and at the end you’ll be greeted by lots of watery sports such as canoeing, windsurfing and whitewater rafting, or climbing, hiking, cycling, abseiling, archery and campcraft if you’d prefer to stay dry. Lake Vwrnwy is an easy half hour away.
