  • Spacious family-friendly site 15 minutes' drive from Lockerbie
  • In the grounds of a 16th-century castle next to the River Annan
  • Golf course, salmon fishing, guided walks and play park
A castle? But of course – surely you deserve nothing less? Hoddom Castle Caravan Park, in the Dumfries & Galloway countryside a 15-minute drive from the town of Lockerbie, is a fine pick for families and those with an eye for the finer things in life. This is a site that’s been running since 1973, but the history of the place goes back much further than that – the castle in question is a 16th-century border keep that’s the focal point of the 10,000 acres of the Hoddom and Kinmount estates. Other historic buildings including the hilltop Repentance Tower and the ancient St Kentigerns churchyard are scattered around the estate, and the River Annan river flows along its edge. Guests are welcome to roam along walking trails or join the tours run by the estate ranger on selected summer Sunday afternoons. Other suitably regal activities are to hand too: the estate has its own nine-hole golf course and some top spots for salmon fishing in the river. Even the most princely of visitors need to let their hair down occasionally, so there’s also a play park on site.

What customers say

This picturesque site in castle grounds gets rave reviews for spacious, well-kept sites, friendly staff, and excellent amenities, including a popular pub. Visitors love the beautiful scenery and woodland walks, perfect for dogs. Some found toilet facilities dated, and occasional noise was noted. Highly recommended for a relaxing stay.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked A great check in with a full run down of faciltites, guidance to pitch etc.
Location, peaceful as darkness fell upon the park. Kids feeling free to be able to play and run around was good.
Showers and toilets were clean, plenty of hot water available.

Disliked The use of powered vehicles. The vast number of kids that were seen to be riding powered electric scooters and bikes was vast. This included a couple of lads that appeared to be doing wheelies all around the roads.
At check in there were no instructions from the park relating to the use of or restrictions preventing the use of.

The question therefore is, in the event of incident, who would be liable?

It may also be an idea on opening the office to have a person check the toilets, or in particular the toiley rolls situation. All cubicles were devoid of toilet paper at 0900.

Pitches are at an angle, blocks needed to level the motorhome, nothing too major though.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Tidy site, clean toilets, etc.

Disliked Pitch was on a slight slope, the cost of electricity was in addition to the pitch price, which can be costly in comparison with other sites in the area.

Was not impressed with the food served in the restaurant, a bit basic, not good value.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Absolutely stunning site, large pitches with plenty of room between each one not over crowed
Lovely little play area for children.
Spotlessly clean toilets and shower rooms. Temperature of showers was amazing
Place to empty waste water and cassette toilets
Plenty of places to refill tanks
Plenty of trails through the woods that kids and adults would love to explore.
There's a laundry room with ironing board.
On site shop sells the basics.
Staff could have been more kind and helpful.
There are also onsite pods to hire

Disliked Nothing to do with the site but the road into the site from the motorway is good but if you wanted to go to say Annan or Lockerbie the roads are single lane and horrific with pot holes but if you take your time are manageable.

Power optional cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Good sized pitch well spaced out between pitches - this kept it quiet but equally friendly and sociable.
Fab walks around the site, beautiful woodland and views, wonderful history.
All quiet by 11 pm around the Tourer pitches.

Disliked Quite a bit of noise from Tent field as they had some large groups, children play behind the motorhome pitches which can be heard but not a nuisance and fab to hear children enjoying the outside.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The surroundings were beautiful and felt very protected in the castle grounds. Great facilities and amazing showers which always make all the difference to a campsite as far as I'm concerned! The park was a good addition, as was the crazy golf and games room. The pizza place and bar in the courtyard was great too. Very reasonably priced site and felt luxurious.

Disliked The electricity top-up system was a bit of a faff, I think I'd rather just pay a bit more for an electric pitch and just plug in.
The gardeners were noisy in the morning which was a shame as it was peaceful otherwise but I suppose it has to be done sometime!

Local attractions

If you need a little tipple to sip while you survey your smart surrounds, take a jaunt to one of the local gin distilleries – the Distillery at Dalton is 10 minutes away by car and Annandale Distillery 15 minutes. (Best be saving their [excellent] wares for later if you’re intending to try your hand at horse carriage driving, 25 minutes away at the Chariots of Fire centre.) Countryside visit not complete until you’ve seen all the farm animals? Take your pick from outings to Dalscone Farm Fun (20 minutes away), Mabie Farm Park and Walby Farm Park (both half an hour): all are packed with furry friends that should have the small sorts (and most likely the grownups too) squealing with glee. If they’re more into beasts of the prehistoric variety, detour instead to Dino Park (10 minutes) for a roaring good time among the lifesized models. Fancy flexing the credit card? Get on over to Gretna Gateway Outlet Village to browse for bargains from a whole host of high street names.
