Patio with picnic-bench seating

  • Luxury glamping pods in a rural setting on the outskirts of Dumfries
  • Half an hour drive to Southerness beach; Drumlanrig Castle 40 minutes
  • Based on a farm, with fully equipped kitchens and private decking
With a hillside setting looking out over countryside on the outskirts of Dumfries (10 minutes’ drive) town, the luxury glamping pods at Craigend Farm are handy if you’re staying to catch up with friends or family on the Dumfries Campus of the University of the West of Scotland. You can also use this scenic spot as a base for discovering the castles, forests and beaches of Dumfries and Galloway. The pristine pods have a tremendous amount cleverly packed into them: each has a king-size bed, a sofa for chilling (it can be turned into a bed if needs be) and a fully fitted kitchen with all crockery and utensils provided. The bedroom has bunk beds (the top one designed for kids) and the compact shower room also has a sink and heated towel rail for a bit of extra comfort. All bed linen and towels are provided, and lots of thought has gone into adding touches like hanging areas for clothes, shaving mirrors and welcome packs with biscuits and snacks. Each pod has its own patio with a barbecue (stock up in Dumfries) and bench seating – where better to sit back and watch spectacular sunsets or admire star-studded skies on clear nights? Erm… perhaps the sheltered seating in front of the pods, cosy spots where you can also enjoy a morning cuppa or a little nightcap after sundown? Your gear is taken care of too, with a secure storage unit for any bikes, fishing equipment and walking shoes.

Local attractions

If you’ve got kids with you, you might like to make Mabie Farm Park (15 minutes’ drive) your first stop, so they can have a run around, try out quad biking and zoom down the hillside slide, before having a cuddle with alpacas, donkeys and lambs (the latter usually in spring). A treat for younger kids is to be had at Dalscone Farm Fun (10 minutes) with soft-play areas, mini-tractor rides and bouncy castles. Add a bit of Scottish culture into your holiday mix with a wander around the grounds of medieval, moated Caerlaverock Castle (15 minutes), once a defence fortress against English marauders. Tick a stately pile off your list with a visit to Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens (40 minutes), open for tours of its art collection hosted in elegant galleries and strolls in extensive woodland, or learn about Scotland’s most famous poet at Robert Burns Ellisland Farm (20 minutes), where Burns wrote some of his greatest works. What about a day at the beach? It’s half an hour’s drive to Southerness Beach, with its landmark whitewashed lighthouse, for strolls along the sand and views over the Solway Firth to Cumbria.
