  • Two-acre site on a family-run smallholding in Bishops Lydeard
  • Five minutes' walk from West Somerset Railway steam trains
  • Rural site backed by woodland; two pubs within a few minutes' walk
If you like to arrive in style on your holidays, this is certainly a place where you can do just that… Bishops Lydeard Caravan and Camping Site is one of those rare places where you can ride into town on a steam railway, thanks to the West Somerset Railway station a mere five minutes’ walk away. Those planning to ride the rails at a later point, meanwhile, should be pleased to hear that access in a more conventional manner is also straightforward, as the A358 passes fairly nearby. Either way, this is a rather splendid spot with pitches spread across a two-acre field surrounded by protected woodland just on the edge of the village. It’s all been set up in the grounds of the 18th-century Greenway House, a Grade II-listed building that was once part of the adjoining Sandhill Park estate. It’s now a family-run smallholding, so you’ll share the space with ducks, geese and chickens and there are more farm animals to spot in the surrounding fields. As well as being a top spot for train enthusiasts and those in search of farm stays, this place also has much to offer walkers, cyclists and folk travelling with four-legged companions, thanks to the plethora of pathways in the surrounds. And it’s also rather handy that there are two fine pubs and a microbrewery within a few minutes’ walk… Life on site is pretty simple, with a few amenities set up in the form of portable toilets, water taps, a chemical disposal point and a shower room. Barbecues are permitted and there’s ice pack freezing available to keep provisions cool.

Liked Fantastic location, near a lovely town, with pubs , tea rooms and shops. A brewery and tap room just up the road too. Beautiful countryside around which we explored on our bikes. Steam train to Minehead too.
The hosts were really helpful and have the most amazing garden.

Liked Quiet from any road noise. Great to hear steam trains and whistles also hens /coquerals. Great location and a Pub with a Thai restaurant was excellent in easy walking distance. Would visit again mid week.

Disliked Toilet facilities minimal to poor. Shower I tried was fine in the 4 block trailer. Quiet mid week but facilities would be over stretched over a busy weekend .

Liked I can’t even begin to report how good this campsite is. From the warm welcome from Karen and her amazing hanging baskets, to the location, 10 mins walk from the West Somerset railway station, and Quantock Brewery. 15 mins walk to The Lethbridge pub which serves delicious, authentic Thai food. And just over the road from it is a Chinese takeaway with the most scrummy food. We took the steam train into Minehead, wowow, incredible. The site is most unusual in that it’s on the edge of a village, so we just parked up, set up and walked everywhere. The microbrewery was incredible, they have different street food vans every night and the best beers! The site is in a field, behind Karen’s house. Hens roam freely, geese were wandering round and there’s a walk into the woods where bats are a plenty. We LOVED this site. We will be back. Multiple times!!

The showers were perfect, toilets, fresh water usage and electricity.
The beautiful chickens and geese were very special. The surrounding areas were interesting and stunning sights. We will definitely be returning to this campsite early next year.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely farm site. Level grass field kept well mown. A short walk to the West Somerset Railway. Friendly owners. Facilities are seasonal trailer type but spotlessly clean and sensibly located around the field. Some electric hook ups available. Everything worked as expected.

Disliked Might benefit from a couple of picnic bench/tables for tent/cyclist campers who otherwise might have nowhere to sit for meals.

Local attractions

Start local with a stroll up to the village to browse the farm shop, the Quantock Brewery, the tea rooms and the little rural life museum within Bishops Lydeard Mill. Just outside the village (but certainly worth travelling a mile for) is a smart hotel where you can pick up day passes for the swimming pool, spa and nine-hole golf course. If you need an excuse to book in for some pampering, perhaps a few long walks or bike rides would fit the bill? There are plenty of options in the nearby Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, around the Blackdown Hills AONB (20 minutes’ drive) or over in the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). And one mustn’t forget the coast – the South West Coast Path starts in Minehead (half an hour), and it’s got plenty of beachy activities too. A little inland from Minehead is the splendid Dunster Castle; other fab options for days out nearby might include horse riding (10 minutes from the site) or gentle strolls around Hestercombe House & Gardens (15 minutes).
