  • Small, friendly farm site a mile from the Jurassic Coast
  • A 15-minute drive from Weymouth, Chesil Beach and Dorchester
  • Simple grass pitches with farm animals to meet; dogs welcome
Itā€™s a gorgeous part of the world, the Jurassic Coastā€¦ and youā€™ll have easy access to some of its most spectacular parts when you stay at Jurassic Camp, a rural site surrounded by the scenery of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From this quiet little site (which is well away from main roads), itā€™s a 15-minute drive to Chesil Beach or the sandy beach and attractions of Weymouth, or a mileā€™s walk/drive to pick up the South West Coast Path around West Fleet. Plenty more lovely corners of the coastline are easily accessible too, as are family attractions including Monkey World and Corfe Castle. You can expect a friendly welcome from the team at this small farm site ā€“ not only from the family that run the place but also from the animals that reside here. Apollo the alpaca and a flock of Valais Blacknose sheep like to meet new guests, and there are also chickens and rhea around the farm that provide fresh eggs each day. (Dogs are welcome to stay here but do note that theyā€™ll need to be kept on a lead and cleaned up after.) A small play area is on hand to provide amusement for the kids; other facilities include showers, washing-up sinks (with hot water), fridges and freezers (for your supplies from the farm shop five minutesā€™ drive away or the supermarket 10 minutes away). Thereā€™s no electricity on the pitches, but thereā€™s an area for charging your gadgets.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked: My daughter loved the animals she managed to stroke an alpaca and spent a lot of time trying to befriend a chicken. The play area was a big hit as well as the firepits. Smores always taste better when cooked on a proper fire. I appreciated the showers and powerbank charging. The communal fridges and freezer were a lovely bonus. The location was perfect for us the owner was friendly. Gorgeous sheep.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked: This is our 3rd year staying at jurassic camp, and once again loved it. I'm a single parent camping with my two daughters ages 3 and 4, and it was perfect for us. The children spent most of there time on the park making new friends. The host Julian was very attentive to anything we needed wether this be a pump for our tent or more fire wood for the campfires. Always happy to help out. Warm and clean showers. Great use of the fridge and freezer facilities. Was delighted to see the additional new USB charging points too. Everyone on the site was very respectful of others, and everyone made us feel very welcome and safe here. The girls love all the animal and the chicken amd geese that freely wonder about the camp. Set in the middle of nowhere, it's a great place to experience the countryside and the stars at night next to the campfire, but also be close enough to drive to the beautiful beach's and any ammienties aswell. This is not a deluxe campsite with a swimming pool etc like other big sites, but its great for a budget friendly, back basic camping to relax and unwind šŸ•

Disliked: No dislikes. My girls and I love this place and will be back next year!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked: Charging points, good showers, plenty of loos. Close to South West Coast Path

Disliked: Loos werenā€™t that clean, the site was crammed full and there werenā€™t many places tucked away from vehicles for a small backpacker tent. Interaction with the owner prior to arrival (I called with a query) made me feel very unwelcome as a one-night stay (through hiking) although he was fine when I was there.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked: A great campsite in a fantastic location. Friendly and helpful owner who explained about his rare breed sheep. Which felt like a private countryfile experience. Beautiful views of the countryside. A few miles walk to fleet lagoon, abbotsbury and chesil beech. The addition of the alpacas and rare breed mountain sheep made our stay. Great to find a good value campsite with flushing toilets.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked: Personal welcome by the campsite owner and a good explanation of where everything is. Animals on site was lovely for my small child. Only a short drive from weymouth beach. A good amount of showers and toilets and a good amount of shared fridge space, stuff wasn't rammed in. Good amount of space left in the field for children to play with the tents around the outside.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked: Location was fab. Having the playground area and the animals everywhere made my daughters day! Julian was extremely helpful/friendly there was a very relaxed and chilled vibe. It was just me and my 8 year old so really liked the way the fields were allocated to different groups. Eg familyā€™s or groups of young adults Facilities are fine but toilets could do with a spruce up. Did t affect anything about our stay. Great value for money.

Liked: Beautiful scenery, just tents so nice and wild, alpacas, hot showers, comfy ground and owner works hard all day and night to keep the camp happy, clean and organised. Water in each field and a play area.

Local attractions

Trips to the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty often mean walks or bike rides ā€“ and those are easily done from Jurassic Camp, with several footpaths and bridleways leading off into the surrounding countryside (with a couple of country pubs within walking distance tooā€¦) For a bunch of different activities, head to the excellent climbing on the Isle of Portland (25 minutesā€™ drive) or try Weymouth (15 minutes) for fishing and scuba diving boat trips. While in Weymouth, spend time at the SEA Life Centre, Fantasy Island amusement park or RSPB Lodmoor nature reserve. Plenty of other days out are nearby too: aim for the Tutankhamun Exhibition and Teddy Bear Museum in Dorchester (15 minutes), meet the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery (10 minutes) or visit the ruins of Corfe Castle (45 minutes). Monkey World and The Tank Museum (both 40 minutes) make good days out too, as do rides on the Swanage Railway (50 minutes).
