  • A couple of minutes’ drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot and 30 from Torquay
Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds. Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk. On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground. When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away. If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

What customers say

This well-kept campground offers private, roomy spots. The pub gets high marks for great food and friendly service. Facilities are clean, but limited toilets (one per gender) and occasional road noise were noted by guests. Conveniently located for exploring.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite (premium)

Liked Location was easy to find, not far from A38 or Dartmoor.
Good sized pitches with privacy courtesy of the hedges between each one. Definitely welcome.
Site was quiet and clean, staff were very friendly & helpful. The pub is great.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (comfort)

Liked Liked my stay but be warned if coming off the A38 and using Google maps it may try and send you over a hill next to the pub and caravan site where the road is extremely tight and there is only enough room for 1 car or a small caravan..

Disliked The WiFi was very poor and I know it's a location by choice and the TV signal isn't very good but if you have a night in, you are relying on the WiFi to give you a signal to watch some films..
Very good overall nice and clean including toilets and showers but 1 cubicle per gents and ladies isn't very good..
Also the barrier system for entry/exit needs looking at..
A code system for entry exit would be preferable to buzzing the Pub, because when it gets busy, it can take a long time for somebody to open the barrier..

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite (comfort)

Liked Good pitches , nice and friendly staff

Disliked Only one proper toilet in each mens and women's then there's portaloos two showers in each could do with a refit . Food on first night really good but Sunday dinner wasn't the best I ordered the trio and got 3 small pieces of meat + no mash or stuffing on plate I asked and they brought it out when I nearly had finished my meal .

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite (premium)

Liked Great size pitches. Each have a large hedge in. between top ensure privacy.

Disliked Not enough toilets for the amount of pitches. Porta-loos available but they stink if you are near them. A couple of the staff members in the pub we found were slightly rude and unhelpful. Others were fab.

Liked Loved the pitch sizes - we are self contained so no problems. Pub food was good too. Location was great for what we needed.

Disliked Lot of road noise. Facilities weren’t appropriate for the size of the site - one wc and two showers for over 25 pitches. We were lucky and could use our own facilities as they were occupied.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass campsite (premium)

Liked The food at the restaurant was a little pricey, but very good. Staff were polite, friendly and very helpful particularly concerning the wellbeing of one of our party experiencing a diabetic hypo.

Disliked The fully serviced pitch was extremely uneven (Pitch 21). Found numerous old metal guy rope pegs lying on the pitch adjacent to where the tyres were on our Motorhome. Each pitch had its own bin - ours was already full when we arrived. The shower block was insufficient for the site size, and the fittings and cleanliness left a lot to be desired. For two nights we paid £100 - we left after the first night!

Liked Great site for our needs of visiting friends locally. Great food and service in the pub. Ideal location for a stopover.

Disliked Some pitches smaller than others, our pitch (No3) was extremely tight to get car, van and awning on.
For the likes of us towing it is very tight turning immediate left as you come onto the campsite.
Wifi better signal in the pub than on site.

Local attractions

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended. Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.
