Playground

  • Valley site among mature trees and landscaped ponds
  • A mile from Haldon Forest Park
  • Playground and modern toilet and shower blocks
Pitching up in the River Kenn valley, on a park surrounded by Devon woodland and countryside, with mature trees and landscaped ponds complete with resident ducks… does this sound like it might fit the bill? If so, take your flock to Haldon Forest Holiday Park, five miles from Exeter and just a mile from the woodland and bike trails of the 3500-acre Haldon Forest Park. Haldon Forest has a playground on the park for kids to go out on a limb under the watchful eye of more mature types. The site also has up to date laundry facilities, plus three modern toilet and shower blocks with heating and free hot water. All in all, you’ll surely find this park all that it’s quacked up to be…

Powered grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Friendly staff on check in, tidy and well maintained site, play area & football pitch for the kids.
Each pitch allocated same size layout, clean shower/toilet room

Disliked Lack of baby changing facilities in shower room (travelled with a baby) making it difficult to use to shower.
Could do with at least one changing station for after shower use.
Also a few brambles around tent pitches (no big deal) but got caught a few times

Kennels close by, noisy first thing and early evening (feeding time) but noise blends into background

Recommend to friends Visit again

Nice quiet campsite with lots of room and nicely spaced pitches.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Big plot sizes
Good play park
Quiet relaxing base
Good prices
Nice shower and plenty of dishwasher sinks

Disliked The was no information given at check in or any info on the campsite facilities or walks around the surround woods area which we hoped we'd find.
Not many facilities or shop but a good base if you are not likely to spend the days there.
Toilet and shower block facilities ok but there was never much hand-wash and hand dryer is pretty useless.

Powered grass tent or RV campsite

Liked The site is lovely and quiet, facilities are relatively modern and cleaned every day, big pitches with useful boundary fences (2ft high), all (I think) with electric hook up. Big children's playground which was always busy with laughter. The owner is super friendly and laid back. Haldon Forest Country Park within walking distance.

Disliked Some of the facilities advertised on the website are no longer open. There is no shop for example, and the nearest shop is about 10-15 minutes drive away in Exeter. And only one toilet block is open - though it was never overloaded. The laundry machines are a bit old fashioned and in a completely dark room full of spiders which will definitely put off several people I know! Generally, all of the facilities appear to have had no TLC in the last few years, still clean and functional but a bit neglected looking.

Powered grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Large pitch sizes.
Lots of space for walking the dogs.
Quiet and not very busy, especially as it was mid August.
We were given a pitch with lots of shade for the dogs.
Fields seemed to be organised with those with children all in the same field.

Disliked Toilet and shower block needs updating.
Not much in the way of washing up space for each amenities block - four sinks to cater for two fields of tents.

Liked This was a marvelous site. It was beautifully laid out. Everywhere was clean and tidy. It was pretty quiet by 10pm every night. One of the best sites we've stayed in. We would certainly be happy to stop again.

Local attractions

Bring the bikes to Devon or hire wheels at Haldon Forest Park to take full advantage of the miles of woodland mountain bike and cycle trails for various levels of ability. Discovery trails, play equipment and several walking trails are also in the forest park including the circular Butterfly Trail and the easy-rated Mamhead Sensory Trail with gorgeous views along the Jurassic Coast and over the Exe estuary. A ten mile horse riding trail is also around for more relaxed forest sightseeing, with horse riding of a different type at the forest’s Exeter Racecourse. Dartmoor National Park, with more hacking, hiking and biking as well as tor climbing, guided walks and geocaching, is a short drive from the holiday park. It has regular events throughout the year, towns and villages to take in, the famous Dartmoor ponies to spot and Dartmoor Zoo with meerkats, monkeys, lions and more. Bring binoculars along with the bikes: the forest park and surrounding area are wildlife havens, with rare birds of prey and wild deer in the forest itself and birdwatching a few miles away at the Site of Special Scientific Interest the Exe Estuary: watch oystercatchers showing excellent culinary taste in breaking open mussels at Bull Hill or take a trip to the nature reserve at Dawlish Warren at the estuary’s mouth. If you’re bringing along the bikes, the National Cycle Network Exe Estuary Trail runs to Exmouth from Dawlish. The sublime sand of Dawlish Warren is one of several South Devon sandy stretches, with the beaches at Teignmouth, Exmouth and Torbay within easy distance of Haldon Forest and the coastal towns of Torquay and Paignton a little further along the coast. Exmouth is the place to don the wetsuit as it’s known for watery sports of all types including diving, windsurfing and sailing; it’s also a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Finally, a stay at Haldon Forest has to include a day or two in Exeter to see its twelfth century cathedral, medieval Guildhall and famous historic quayside with antique shops, restaurants, canoe and boat trips and events such as dragon boat racing and guided tours.
