  • Family-run site a short walk from pubs in Ashton and Breage
  • A five-minute drive to Porthleven's beach, harbour and restaurants
  • Playground on site; firepits for hire and logs for sale
According to Greek mythology, the original ‘Elysian Fields’ were meadows, a haven that provided sanctuary and breathed new life into all those worthy of entering. While Cornwall's Elysian Fields are in no means mythological, they are a properly splendid place to unwind… Set between the little villages of Breage and Ashton, the family-run site has seven acres of space and scenic views towards Tregonning Hill, as well as distant glimpses of the sea and cliffs of the Lizard peninsula. Pitch up here and you’ll be able to stroll along quiet footpaths to the local villages or walk to the top of Tregonning Hill, which stands at 194 metres and gives views from coast to coast over west Cornwall, including Mount’s Bay and St Ives. More adventurous walkers can explore the Godolphin Estate, while those who’ve come along for the coast can take a short drive to the ancient harbour at Porthleven or gorgeous Praa Sands beach. The site has its own bar and restaurant, Tony's Tavern (open during high season only), with draught Cornish beers and cider. Cornish breakfasts and lighter breakfast baps are available in the mornings between 9am and 11am, and a range of evening meals are on offer between 6pm and 9pm. Takeaway meals can be delivered to the pitches if you prefer. To make your stay more comfortable, picnic benches, windbreaks and firepits can be hired, with a plentiful supply of kiln-dried logs on sale in the shop to help warm up cooler evenings. Also on site are a playground, a small shop (open during high season; opening hours are displayed on the door, but outside of those hours, the shop can also be opened upon request), a laundry room with coin-operated washing machines and a tumble dryer. Guests also have use of two large freezers, a fridge, an iron and ironing board, and a microwave.

Liked: Lovely flat site. Virtually empty when we visited in early September. Showers and toilets very impressive. Very friendly and accommodating owners they offered to open up the bar just for us if we wanted a drink. 10 minute walk to 2 pubs for food as the onsite restaurant had closed for evening meals for the season.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Powered grass campsite (XL)

Liked: Fantastic facilities, very clean. Individual shower room are brilliant, with a toilet and sink thrown in so you can preen till your hearts content.
Tony's tavern may be limited for space if busy, but it's another great touch, and the food is good and reasonably priced if you don't fancy cooking.
Staff are very friendly and will help out the best they can, even walking you to your pitch.

Disliked: Only draw back is the entrance, I bottomed out in my 7.5m motorhome everytime I entered or left.

Primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: What a pearl, perfectly placed for exploring so many nice beaches and attractions around the area. It started with a helpful email just before we set off with all the useful info we needed. Friendly greeting on arrival, explained all the facilities and showed us to our pitch. The site was busy but well spaced out on lush green areas. Facilities on site were excellent, lovely individual, quirky shower rooms, 10 of them, with sink and toilet in each cubicle, all kept nice and clean and open 24hrs. The cabin was a great touch, good drinks, great Cornish breakfast, we went along to a busy fun quiz night one evening. At the site was a laundry room with washing machines and a drier, 2 freezers, a fridge and microwave, and secure charging pods for all your mobile devices, Wi-Fi across the site was pretty reliable. They have put a lot of thought into convenience. All staff were friendly. A stand out young lady, Natalie, was a star, so friendly and helpful. Will book again

Liked: We had a fantastic time, the campsite is very clean and in a great location. The showers and toilets were lovely, Tony's tavern was brilliant with breakfast, lunch, dinner and entertainment, we had no issues with noise or anybody being disrespected in the evenings. We would definitely recommend and be visiting again. We managed to fit in the Eden project, St Ives, a visit to Lizard, surfing and a bike ride in the 4 nights we stayed, everything within a 30 minute car journey.

Liked: Everything! We had such a lovely stay, it was quiet and peaceful but the happy sound of children having fun! Shower blocks were really good and clean, fun for the kids to pick which one to go in. park for children was good, all tents spaced out nicely, renting out the the log burners and roasting marshmallows! Plenty do around the area! Was a lovely stay and the lady on reception (didn’t catch her name) was lovely and so helpful!

Disliked: Nothing! Apart from the food van not turning up!

Local attractions

Having gazed out over Tregonning Hill, it's a fine idea to amble over there for a closer look. It’ll take you around 45 minutes of leisurely walking to get to the top for some excellent views over both north and south coasts and plenty of historical info on the old mining pits and war memorial. Likewise, the beaches you’ve glimpsed from afar look pretty fab from up close too. The sands of Porthleven, three miles away, are the nearest, and there are plenty of others a short drive away, including Praa Sands and Marazion (from where you can take a boat or cross the causeway to St Michael’s Mount). Arty types may like to spend a day in St Ives, half an hour’s drive away, taking in the exhibits of Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Perhaps less highbrow but equally entertaining is the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek.
