  • Family site behind a 17th-century pub in the South Downs National Park
  • Jane Austen’s House 10 minutes’ drive; The Watercress Line 20 minutes
  • Spacious, dog-friendly grass pitches; meals and takeaways available
Staying in the South Downs National Park is an attractive prospect as it is. However, with a characterful 17th-century inn to its name, Camp Whichway @ The Pub With No Name gives you much more to look forward to: top-notch food, fine ales and a warm welcome with a sea of friendly faces. Tucked behind a popular and storied pub, the pop-up site sits on a plateau about 800ft above sea level and at the meeting point of three parishes steeped in history. You can get your feet under the table in the bar every night, freeing up plenty of time for you, the kids and any dogs to explore the fertile farmland and undulating chalk downlands of the national park by day. The level site has generous grassy pitches in a flower-filled meadow that’s a staggering distance from the pub. There are flushing loos and hot showers in the timber-clad facilities block, plus refuse disposal and a washing-up area close by. Guests have easy access to ambles – straight from canvas to countryside if you like – under mature trees, as well as stunning sunsets and star-filled skies on clear nights.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked 1 - The location
2 - How quiet it was at night
3 - Can park your vehicle on site
4 - Laura was extremely helpful when making the booking.

Disliked 1 - Wash facilities were ok. Photos online need to be updated to reflect the current condition of the facilities.
2 - The barman working on Saturday night at the pub needs to cheer up. He looked miserable when serving guests.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The privacy and amount of space we had as we were in quite a large group. The connecting pub was a life saver in the more challenging weather.

Disliked The toilets ran out of tissue paper on Saturday and you were already damp from the rain. The toilets and showers weren’t cleaned at all whilst there so got muddy and slippy and sinks not very nice to use. Water pressure when showers were used the taps either didn’t work or it was a trickle. Never had to check in or out as arrived late so security onto the site wasn’t great anyone could have joined us.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely location in the countryside with plenty of space to pitch and able to park right next to your pitch. Site is clean and flat. Extremely convenient with the pub a 1 min walk away (good food and drink, good kids menu).

Disliked Toilet and shower block could do with a bit of a clean.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Nice rural location. Large enough site so that campers were all spread out with plenty of room. Welcomed by site manager who checked we had found everything we needed and on-site toilets were clean and very convenient. Was also one of only a few sites locally who would accept a single night stay which was great for our needs.

Disliked Only downside was lack of hot water during a visit and so gave the showers a miss, but we don’t expect hotel level luxury when camping for a night!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Pub was nice, food was good and drinks reasonably priced.

Friendly enough vibe and nice location. Seemed everyone was quite chilled and having an okay time.

Disliked Facilities: low water pressure and unisex design meant there was only a limited capacity for a large amount of people. Sinks stopped working. Toilets stopped flushing. Everyone we spoke to was complaining about it.

Price: Expensive for what you get. No water facilities in the field such as a field tap, so everything has to be done from a big sink outside. Limited washing facilities considering the amount of people on site. Unisex toilets meant overcrowding.

Crowding: Bank holiday weekend was loud, like really loud. Very large groups of people smoking drugs, playing music loudly into the very late hours and beeping car horns.
A lot of people for a small field. Tents where packed together. It was alright but not recommended unless you enjoy "festival camping"

Lack of information: had no "check in experience" a lady eventually found us with a clip board but never explained what's what with the the site.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Love staying at this campsite. Been coming here for a while now. It has everything you need for a couple of nights stay.

Disliked I experienced some rude people next to me on my last visit. However, this was sorted out.
The manager was there quite late dealing with people who were just complaining about anything. I think she dealt with it very well.
The water pressure in the toilet/shower block is not the best, however, there is water just outside the toilet/shower block, I use that. This doesn't ruin my stay.

Maybe a bigger bin in the toilet block, that way people won't need to throw the blue roll on the floor when they've wiped their hands.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked The pub
The campsite itself was lovely and when we arrived it was a little slice of paradise

Disliked I know it was bank holiday weekend so expected it to be full but, there was no water pressure or hot water as a result of the amount of people using the facilities
It was overcrowded in one field but there was plenty of space in the other
It all just could have done with a bit more organisation
