  • Motorhome pitches in woodland a 10-minute drive from Lake Windermere
  • Lakeland Motor Museum five minutes’ drive; Ulverston 15 minutes
  • Playground and duck pond; sauna and hot tub; launderette; shop
Experience the stunning landscape of the Lake District – but without the tourist madness often associated with the area – by staying at Black Beck Holiday Park, a peaceful site on the fringes of the national park. You’re only a 10-minute drive along the A590 from the southernmost tip of Lake Windermere here, which puts waterfront hikes and water-based activities within easy-peasy reach. Motorhome pitches (with water and drainage hook-up points) occupy an area of mature woodland with exquisite views of distant mountains. Among the on-site facilities is a secure children’s playground (with swings and see-saws), while the adults’ play area includes a sauna and a hot tub (with which you might well fall in love after a few days of scrambling up fells…), plus a shop selling beer and other local specialities. If you prefer your beer in a more social setting, a pub in the village of Bouth (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk) serves ales and traditional fare in a cosy setting with a woodburning stove and assorted taxidermy. There are more dining options along the A590, on the banks of the River Leven (about five minutes) and in the lively market town of Ulverston (15 minutes). Back at the site, take your dog (for which there is a small additional daily fee) for a walk along the site’s wooded paths down to the pond, where the kids can feed the ducks. In addition to a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests, the site has a launderette (with an iron and a board) and a drying room.

Liked: Quiet site but we were there after a bank holiday weekend.
Facilities were good although a little far to the shower and toilet block from the motor home sites. A new block is being built right next door so this will be good.
Lovely duck pond and play park for the kids.

Bluebell FHU gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Brilliant location for visiting attractions around South Lakes. Pitch large enough for our twin wheeler and awning on gravel but limited grass area. Very very quiet and peaceful at night. Shower block spotless and modern, water hot, hairdryers provided. Reception staff friendly and helpful. Shop on site stocks essentials. Supermarkets 10 min drive to Ulverston. Pub 15 min walk down quiet country lane. Food vans visit once a week. You may walk your dogs in woods to rear of site through gate near static 5 Park View (up steep hill). Although this is a holiday park it does not feel like one. Would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike. Only wish would be for larger grass area around pitch but as mostly out in daytime this was not a great problem.

Liked: Warm welcome Great communication before and during the stay. Beautifully kept site with a glorious variety of bird life. Beautiful rural setting with great views, huge level pitches and a great little shop. Good shower block a pleasant stroll away ( in glorious weather) and building one closer to the tourer site.

Disliked: Wifi wobbly but what do you expect up there?

Bluebell FHU gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Idyllic setting, the local bird life, the thoughtful way that the park has been landscaped and ornamented. Very clean site, pitches are reasonably private and perfectly flat so no faffing with ramps. Will be even better once the new facilities block is completed as the existing is a bit small and far from the pitches. If you like ducks you'll enjoy their company!

Disliked: Nothing really.

Bluebell FHU gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely staff. Good digital Tv with hired Arial lead. Lovely site, lots of birds . Love the pond and friendly ducks. Good Wi-Fi. Lots of places to visit in the area.

Disliked: Showers - nice and clean, hot water but not much room to get changed. Water runs into dressing area. Needs shelf or something in shower to put shampoo on rather than floor.
Wakened at 06:00 by ? Generated noise for 2 hours.

Liked: Well laid out site in a good location.good playground and duck pond.

Disliked: Toilet block was a distance from pitch. Pitches were close together. The bin area was over spilling and smelly, and dog waste bin hadn’t been emptied during our stay and was also full. It was difficult to use water on pitch as tap was pointing into the hedge.

Liked: Beautiful scenery, modern clean warm shower block. Friendly reception and pitch was flat and close to amenities. WiFi seemed reliable.
Great walks and a walkable pub.
Lovely duck pond and visiting ducks.

Disliked: The view from the touring pitches is limited, they are enclosed in a little enclave- it would have been nice to have a bit of the lovely scenery to see.

Liked: Lovely well maintained campsite, very clean and tidy. Good toilet and shower facilities. Staff on reception very helpful and welcoming.

Disliked: Couldn't get a signal for the TV which is only a very minor gripe although people with children will understand a TV is good for keeping them quiet for a bit :)

Local attractions

A converted mill on the banks of the Leven houses the Lakeland Motor Museum (five minutes’ drive), with a vast collection of vintage vehicles – from bicycles and scooters to motorcars, plus the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition, featuring several vehicles used by Donald Campbell during his speed-record breaking attempts. The kids might enjoy meeting Peter Rabbit, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-Tail and other beloved characters at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, in Bowness-on-Windermere (25 minutes). Here, they can also learn about the author and her conservation efforts, while across Windermere Lake is National Trust - Hill Top (25 minutes), the farmhouse she bought in 1905. National Trust - Sizergh (25 minutes) is a medieval property that’s been home to the same family for 800 years. During this time, they have accumulated a remarkable collection of portraits and decorative art objects. Stroll through the extensive grounds looking for butterflies and hawfinches.
