Campsite as seen from the bank

  • Lake District working farm site 10 minutes' drive from Millom
  • A 15-minute drive to Haverigg beach; 20 minutes to Coniston Water
  • Heavy horse riding centre on site for taster rides and hacks
Over in the southwestern corner of the Lake District National Park there are lots of ways to explore the scenery – hiking and mountain biking are popular picks of course, but for guests at Baystone Bank Farm Campsite there’s another option in the form of a horse riding centre on site. And this isn’t just any old horse riding centre – this is the world’s only BHS-approved heavy horse riding centre, where guests can sign up to ride splendid shire horses such as Clydesdales, Suffolk Punches and Ardennes. There’s something for all abilities here, from short rides for kids to longer hacks along the area’s bridle paths for more experienced riders. Of course, you don’t have to be a rider to appreciate this corner of the Cumbria countryside – there are plenty of options around for walks too, with footpaths running from the farm up to Black and White Combes, and trails for mountain bikers as well. It doesn’t have to be all action around here though – there’s plenty of scope to chill out at the site, which is part of a working farm. You’re welcome to take a stroll around to see the sheep and horses meandering or look out for birds and deer in the neighbouring woods. There’s also a stream running alongside the farm – it’s a good place to seek out wildlife, or to have a paddle at the end of your day’s activities. Pitches here have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area, plus a play area to keep the kids busy. Barbecues and campfires are permitted, with supplies for either at the shops in Millom (10 minutes’ drive).

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location and views were lovely, really welcoming and friendly staff

Disliked The facilities are good but not very clean..washing up and toilet facilities were kept clean but the showers were full of mold and grime and didn’t smell very pleasant and neither did the communal fridge!

On our last evening we came back to a large flock of sheep around the campsite, which were left roaming all night around our tent. I love the outdoors and animals but to be woken up to sheep nibbling my tent or head butting it to investigate became quite annoying at 2,3,4am…not to mention the smell and the poo the next morning surrounding the tent.
Sadly we left the site with a more negative feeling, with the car and our kit stinking of sheep poo. Very sweet animals but I didn’t really want to be sleeping with them! It was quite a shame really as the site has amazing potential and the rest of our stay we enjoyed!

Lovely peaceful stay.

Liked Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Views were great.
Facilities clean (especially with all the mud that was around that weekend) and spacious.
Nice little shop.
Lovely seeing all the horses on their daily treks.

Disliked Not being pitched next to our daughter as requested on booking, although we were only about 6 pitches apart.

Bramless primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Facilities kept on top off always topped up, clean and any issues Jamie was on it straight away after a text to let him know. Had the heavy horses available as an activity. Lots of areas available to take dogs for walks.

Disliked Travelled as a party, 1 tent 1 camper van asked to be together as came as a group but still got separated and spread apart despite asking and it being quiet. 11pm Silent curfew was not policed and neighbours were noisy well after 12am.

Dirty not what you want as a mum with 3 children with me

Bramless primitive grass tent campsite (comfort)

Liked Local corner shop

Disliked Was put in a field which was absolutely full of animal poo!
I understand it's a horse trek site but this was more like sheep poo!
Could not drive car anywhere near the tent which was awful for pitching up and taking down
There is no playground like stated!
Really uneven ground nothing like we have stayed at before

Friendly staff, great campsite, will definitely be going back.

Hedgeside primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely campsite, the girls loved the stream, looking at the horses and toasting marshmallows by the fire. Facilities were clean and it was really handy having a fridge and freezer next to the washing up area. Also have to mention the amazing views.

Bramless primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Really liked the atmosphere and how friendly the staff were, I would definitely go back the scenes surrounding the campsite are beautiful

Disliked The only dislike would be that we were in a sheep field (we agreed to this upon arrival but maybe should of said no) there was sheep faeces all over the pitch site which is to be expected but could have been cleaned prior to us parking as we had it all over our shoes and in the van by the end of the trip

Ann and Tony where great, made sure I was ok, being a solo traveller

Bramless primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Had a 2 week solo trip with my dog, I cut my trip short after 12 nights due to the weather. Over all I really joyed my stay. Views are beautiful, hugo my dog enjoyed cooling off in the little stream on the warmer days. I was in the bambles field which I have to say is very uneven. While I was staying the sheep joined the field and Tony very kindly put a fence around to stop the sheep coming to close to the tent. Having the fire pit was great and were I did most of cooking. Some nice walks from the campsite. The camp shop is great for milk, bread. Would like to say a big thank you to Ann and Tony site wardens.

Disliked Did think it was a little over priced. Facilities are basic, but ok

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved this campsite, quiet, serene, next to a lovely stream.
Toilet block was mixed gender with showers included.
The site was shut down a few times every day for the sheep to go into the yard and then back again which the kids loved (so did i)
Cafe was lovely and the chef accommodated our veggie kid with a special breakfast of his own.
Well worth a stay and we will be back.

Local attractions

If you’re exploring on your own two feet, start with climbs of Black Combe and White Combe, both of which can be accessed directly from the farm. Swinside Stone Circle (10 minutes’ drive) is another local spot worth visiting, or you can set off to see some of the Lake District’s top sights – perhaps Coniston Water (20 minutes) or Stanley Ghyll waterfall (half an hour). Need a little more adrenaline in your life? There are miles of excellent mountain bike trails at Grizedale Forest (half an hour) along with a Go Ape adventure course (40 minutes). Path to Adventure activity centre (20 minutes) can also sort you out with things like canyoning and climbing. Keeping it all a little more low-key, you may like to head to Haverigg beach (15 minutes) for a stroll through the sand dunes, take a steam-powered boat cruise from Coniston (half an hour) or be dazzled by the shiny vintage vehicles at the Lakeland Motor Museum (half an hour).
