  • Dog-friendly Northumberland farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Alnwick
  • A 20-minute drive to Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle on the coast
  • Pub five minutes’ drive away; dark skies with views of the Milky Way
It’s no secret that Northumberland has a stunning coastline and lush green countryside, but fewer have been introduced to the dramatic evening skies and rural views of Shipley Lane Camping and Caravanning. At night, the Milky Way can often be spotted up in the dark sky – and when the sun’s still high in the sky, views over the Cheviot hills make up the green screen. From the well-maintained touring pitches (which all have electric hook-up and water and waste points) it's easy to explore the Northumberland coast and its beaches – Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle and Alnmouth are only 20 minutes’ drive away. The Northumberland Coast Path is splendid for a day of hiking and birdwatching, with the hilly trails of the Northumberland National Park about 25 minutes’ drive away. Those big names live up to their reputation, but local spots like the pub in the village of Eglingham (five minutes’ drive away) are just as lovely. Seek out a page-turner in the famed bookstore of Alnwick, 10 minutes’ drive away, too. If the scene sounds like something out of the Harry Potter wizarding world, you’re not far wrong; the town's castle is one of the series’ filming locations. The Alnwick Garden is mightily peaceful too, with 4000 different plants to spot as you stroll. Dogs are welcome on site as long as they get on with the resident dogs. The site’s border collies greet owner Robert with great excitement when he releases them from their kennels to help out on the livestock farm. Meanwhile, Timmy, who is now retired, likes to lie outside the house and keep an eye on things. The farm dogs take their duties seriously, so you may well hear a bit of barking at night.

Perhaps a small play area would be beneficial

Liked It was exactly what we were expecting in a beautiful setting. Peaceful and well maintained. All we needed was electricity and water. The cows were the only noise, and views are amazing.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful scenic site. Quiet and peaceful, also very tidy and kept. Host was great, provided information before arrival but other than that we were left alone. We decided to eat out, useful that an Uber will pick you up from here and its close (and cheap enough) into Alnwick. From Alnwick we got a bus to Alnmouth beach after a local recommended it - certainly worth the bus ride. Loved how the countryside scenery is stunning but there is a sandy beach a stone throw away too! Really would have liked to stay another night but work commitments didn't allow so will definitely return. Great place.

Local attractions

Which way, captain? That’s what the kids might ask – and your answer may very well be the medieval hilltop fortress of Warkworth Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where the Duke of Northumberland once lived, or the 14th-century Dunstanburgh Castle (20 minutes). For good views, head to the Holy Island (40 minutes), a tidal island with an ancient priory. Northumberland National Park's Upper Coquet Valley surrounding the River Coquet (half an hour) is a dream for walks or bike rides, and the same can be said of Breamish Valley’s prehistoric hill forts (around 15 minutes). Further afield, the Kielder Observatory (an hour and a half) may be worth the journey for keen stargazers. Scottish border towns like Kelso (50 minutes) and Hadrian's Wall (50 minutes’ drive) are also within reach.
